Print vs Digital Photos

I have a photo dilemma. I've always been one to get prints made of my digital photos to fill up my photo albums. I always imagined thumbing through them someday. But besides the time it takes me to put the photos in the books, I never look at them. I'm running out of space to house all these books, not to mention the money and time this all takes

I think I'm about to make the choice to stop with the printouts and just keep my photos digitally. I just wonder if I'll regret this. Has anyone gone through this?

if you can keep up printing them and putting albums together, i def would.
it is def time consuming and expensive but looking back it is nice to see the actual pictures and go through albums...in my opinion it does not compare to sitting in front of a computer screen to view pics

Re: Print vs Digital Photos

There's really no negative to not printing them. As long as you have backup copies, you'll always have them, they'll never fade, age, etc. In 10 years from now, if you want to print them, you still can.
If they are digital, you can look at them anywhere. If you have them on an on-line storage location, you can show any and all photos to anyone with an Internet connection, like a smart phone.

I have very few pics printed out, but I have 10s of thousands of digital pics. I look through my pics all the time. I don't look at any pics in books.

I have them all on Kodak Gallery, which I know is becoming shutterfly soon. But that kind of worries me too. What if I go totally digital and one day that site or all sites go away... I know very unlikely but... Maybe I'll keep up the printing but edit. Do I really need 10 of a similar pose. Or maybe I don't need all 83 picts from my sister-in-laws recent baby shower.

I have most of my photos stored digitally, but everything is backed up (and double backed up). I have everything on my laptop, facebook, and 2 external harddrives. You're fine, just make sure everything is backed up just in case!

You can always use shutterfly or a similiar site to make digital photobooks. They look so nice and are very easy. Just wait until one of the sites has a sale!

Re: Print vs Digital Photos

I haven't printed photos in the longest time. And I feel awful about it. There's something not quite the same about digitals as opposed to prints. I'd try to keep up with the printing! I know once Shutterfly has another print sale, I'm going to try to catch up again.

On a side note, has anyone seen Jim Gaffigan's new comedy special? He does a whole bit on our obsession with photos and how we don't print them or delete them or do anything with them, we just buy a new computer. He goes on to say soon we won't have "wedding albums" or "vacation albums", but a "wedding computer". Chat Icon It was pretty funny and spot on.

I have "folders" because I have several Terabyte drives to store all of my photos. I don't delete any pics. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I have them on two drives at my house, a portable drive to bring to work, a drive at work, and on-line storage. Right now, my digital photos are safer than my printed photos. If my house floods or has a fire, I lose all my printed pics, but I still have off-site copies of my digital pics.

I actually prefer looking at a computer screen rather than printed pics. The pics are bigger, I can zoom in, I can tweak the monitor settings if I need to. For me, it's just a nicer photo experience.

Re: Print vs Digital Photos

at the end of the year, or if we take a trip, I will make an album and use a sticky disk holder to store the disk. Sometimes we save images we don't really need or are not good or are duplicates. Cull your images to the ones you really like or want, and only keep the ones you do. If you choose to maintain images solely on your computer, make sure to back them up on to an external hard drive!!

Print vs Digital Photos

also, why not go the route of picaboo or blurb or the like? then you're not printing out images and buying the bulky books. The books form picaboo are small and thin

Re: Print vs Digital Photos

Hey there! Just got an e-mail from Shutterfly that they are having a promotion for 101 free prints today only! I figured if you're still interested in printing your photos, this is a nice jump start.

The code is "prints4th".

Thanks so much for thinking of me!

I actually ordered a whole bunch of prints from Kodak before they closed. This wouldn't have worked anyway since my photos haven't transferred over yet but I appreciate the thought.

Re: Print vs Digital Photos

We have everything digitally on a portable hard drive, then we print a decent number of them also. I agree the actual albums of pictures take up tons of space. I've been trying to convince DH that we can start doing more books through shutterfly or snapfish instead of physical prints so we can still have the pictures to thumb through, but you can fit so much more in a book.

We also only order when we get codes and discounts since it can be expensive to print.
