Powerlines

how do you feel about living close to them?

I have now seen 2 houses that were pretty nice but were very close to HUGE powerlines

thoughts?

Re: Powerlines

I'm not from LI, so this didn't bother me in NYC since they're all over Brooklyn and Queens.

Although I would be terrified if I had kids...obe of my worst fears is a house fire b/c of a thunderstorm or downed power line.

I would buy if the house was a LOT cheaper...otherwise, keep looking. Prices ARE coming down.

Yes, all over. But you may not have noticed because you weren't looking to buy.

If it gives you pause, like was said above, stay away. Your house is out there without power lines.

Re: Powerlines

The LIPA right-away runs right behind my parent's house and it never caused us any trouble. The lines are so far in the air, I don't really consider them a problem.

Re: Powerlines

I think there are conflicting views on whether or not these have harmful long term effects. I have to say, I would avoid a house too close to the powerlines - better safe than sorry, IMO.

My sister bought a house in Holtsville - right by the Powerlines that go along the LIE.
The house was beautiful! When she sold it last year - she didn't have a problem.

Re: Powerlines

When looking in Hauppauge and ENPt we saw quite a few houses with high tension power lines (these are huge towers not street lamp height lines) and regardless of how much we might have loved the house we passed. I *personally* find them to be an eyesore (same with water towers) so they were a big NO on our list...not to mention the conflicting studies on whether or not there are any long term effects on people.

Re: Powerlines

I've lived next to a LIPA right-of-way for 28 years and not one health problem. I think if you are near the ones that run through the towers there might be reason for concern because they are extremely high voltage. However, there never has been a link made between health problems and power lines, even though that was a concern at one time.

My biggest concern would be resale value, not health concerns.

Either way, I would never buy near power lines just for aesthetic reasons.
