Power of Attorney

Can someone explain the process to me, please? I need to get one so I am not sure who to call how long it takes, how much it is, and what the overall process is like. This is for my father. TIA

Re: Power of Attorney

I did mine on Legal Zoom. It took 10 minutes for the POA and about an hour for the will. The POA gives my husband the right to conduct all of my business on my behalf should a doctor declare me unable to do so myself. He has a POA that gives me the same ability for his stuff because we have seperate accounts.

They print it up and mail it to you. Your Dad would need to sign it in front of a Notary.

It was $39.

It's a very simple process, but it's a serious undertaking.

You can google NYS power of attorney and many free forms come up. Your father will need to sign the form in the presence of a Notary Public. He must initial each power he is granting you.

You must then sign and have your signature notarized and present the document each time you are acting on behalf of your father.

Some places require originals, so I would have him execute more than one form and then make a bunch of copies.

My dad is in a nursing home, would a notary come there? Thank you so much for answering this.

Most nursing homes tend to have a notary on staff. Speak with the social worker as well. They should be a support to you.
