Potty training question
We are just starting to potty train and I know everyone says you need to just go all in. It's just so hard to commit to staying in the house for several days at a time. What exactly should potty training look like in order to be successful? Is keeping him in training pants (no diaper) in the house, but then a diaper on when outside of the house at first a BAD idea?i think he's really ready and afraid to sabbotage whatever progress we've made so far.

I went all in. From everything I read, diapers, training pants, and even underwear gives a sense of comfort to "go." We stayed home completely one weekend and dd went naked bottomed the first day and commando with loose shorts the second day (we had previously tried with underwear and she had accidents). By day 3 or 4 we were ready for a very fast outing. I recommend the book "oh crap potty training". Good luck!

I think with potty training, either they're ready or they're not. It's like crawling or taking a first step - you can encourage them to do their best but you can't make it happen. If they're ready, they just need a day or two. If they're not, they'll keep having accidents and you'll need diapers/pull-ups on hand for a long time. (I'm not talking about night training, btw, which is unrelated to daytime training)
So yeah, I'd go all in. If they're not ready for that, they're not ready. IMHO.

Imo switching back and forth between diaper and underwear can cause confusion. We put underwear on and never looked back

Potty training question
I waited for a few days when we didn't have to go out much and just started putting underwear on her. She was really excited about her underwear because we let her pick them out, so that helped to motivate her to keep them dry. When we went out, I didn't put a diaper or pull up on her, but I did bring her little potty in the car, and I had her go before when we got to our destination, and again before driving home, and she stayed dry successfully.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm nervous about not turning back to diapers and being stuck in for a chunk of days. I'd like to wait till the bitter cold of winter when we will be stuck in anyway but he's ready now and I know it.
Is it not advised to use diapers for long car rides either? (In the beginning)

I posted a few months ago about this. I was nervous too about accidents in the car etc. I never went back to diapers. If he had an accident so be it lol. Dont go to diapers or pull ups. Like a previous poster said i have a potty in my truck just in case. If you alternate he will get confused.

Don't go back to diapers ever. You will learn to deal with accidents. IMO accidents are all part of the learning for them.
Long car rides you learn to make stops. I also have a travel potty in the car. And you just learn to deal with accidents. Extra clothes, cleaning items etc.

That's very true that it takes a change in mindset. I've become so accustomed to diapers, it's all I know! For those with boys, at what age did you start training? I know a lot of people wait till 3 with boys but that seems so late to me.

Is it common for girls to train earlier? Most of my friends have girls! And please no  ! It's not a race and everyone does it eventually!

I have potty trained both and while my DD seemed to grasp the concept sooner and had no issue pooping on the potty, they were both fully trained around 3.
How old is your child? Also, don't be so concerned with being "stuck" in the house. It's not like you will never go out ever again lol. Let them pick out some fun character undies and get them excited about it.

He turned 2 a few weeks ago and pees in the potty 1-2 times a day "just for fun". He's in diapers all day long but will ask to use it.

my DS was 2.5 ish and trained in 2 days. I have friends and it was all over the map as far as age. gender didn't matter.

I honestly think it depends on the kid. Everyone told me that pull-ups were the devil and never to use them but DS was always fine in them. For the first month or two after we potty trained him we would use pull-ups for outings and he never once had an accident.

Maybe I'll give in and use these for outings at least in the beginning. I get nervous because we have places during the week we MUST be so there's never a solid 3 days even that we could stay in the entire day, which is how I imagine doing this at first.

I agree with this. We tried with my son one weekend and he had many accidents so we stopped. About a month later we tried again and he told us he had to go and he went. He never looked back. He never had another accident. It was incredible. Pooping was a little different. He is just now doing poopy in the potty several months after he mastered peeing. Every child I'd different but i do believe when they are ready they will let you know. Good luck!
