Potty training poop issue
Need advice or recommendations from moms who have already been there done that. My son who is turning 3 next month has been in underwear and peeing in the potty for the past month. He is in pull-up at night but he either wakes up dry or gets up on his own and goes to the bathroom. The issue.....pooping in the potty. He will not do it and goes in his underwear. He is not withholding pooping or waiting until he has the pull up but just goes in his underwear. Any ideas of what to try. We have tired good rewards, toy rewards, money rewards etc.
Help please

Re: Potty training poop issue
All I can tell you is we were in the EXACT same situation with DD. Exact. Nothing worked. Sticker charts, rewards, punishments, nada. It was maddening. Finally, at 4 years old, it just clicked. She did it once and that was it. Like a switch and she never looked back. I read up on it and it seemed to be a common problem. Poop is just harder for them to be trained on for some reason. Wish I had better advice. ..just empathy and commiseration!

Did you keep her in underwear and just clean it? That is what we plan on doing and just apologize profusely (and give generous gifts) to his teachers at day care!

Re: Potty training poop issue
DS was withholding pooping but I figured out he would go every night around 7pm. So i watched him one night and as soon as I saw him starting to go (in pull-ups), I ran him into the bathroom and put him on the toilet. He was scared, but he couldn't hold it in, so he went on the toilet. As soon as he did, he said, "that was easy!" and we never looked back.
My advice is to try to catch him in the act and get him onto a toilet. It may help him get over the fear. Good luck!

Re: Potty training poop issue
I agree with the poster above - try to catch him in the act.
My DD was scared to poop on the potty at first but when I saw she was on the verge of going in her underwear - i literally ran her to the toilet. She cried but then I assured her it was okay and told her that mommy and daddy poop on the potty too.
A couple of times after - she had a few accidents but the poop was solid enough I just flushed it down and made sure she saw that is where it goes and changed her underwear.
After a couple of days of accidents she goes to potty to poop but asks me to hold her hand when she pushes.
I think she is over the hump and it has been about a week and half and no accidents.
My advice is just to be consistent once you decide to transition fully.

Yes we did keep her in underwear. We ended up throwing a lot of them out. And the funny thing is, she rarely did it at daycare. She would wait until she got home to do her pooping. So it wasn't such an issue at daycare, maybe only once.

Re: Potty training poop issue
Wish I had advice, but I'm in the same boat. My DD (who just turned 3) has been pee trained since August, but refuses to poop on the potty. I've tried every incentive possible, sweets, toys, iPad, but nothing will work. She doesn't hold it in - when she has to poop she asks for a diaper.
My ped said that I have to wait until she's ready. Pressuring her will just cause her to resist more.

Unfortunately I do not think it is fear and him just being stubborn. He pooped once at school in the potty and once I caught him in the act and we ran to the potty. He was all excited but then the next day pooped in his pants again!

I basically told day care just take it and put it all in a bag and leave it for us. I do not expect them to be scraping poop for us! They of course have cleaned them but I really wish they wouldn't so I would feel less guilty.

Potty training poop issue
My son just fully potty trained and he's 4. Peeing was fairly easy, he even went from sitting to standing without too much of a problem. Getting him to poop on the potty took nearly a full year. Then on Christmas Eve it was like it just clicked, and he hasn't had a single accident since. He's been fully in underwear since the start of the new year.

Yeah, the few times she did it a school they cleaned it up pretty well and I felt bad! One time they said it was so bad they threw the underwear out, but if I wanted it, they could get it from the garbage. I was like um, no thanks!

Did you make a really big deal of it? I mean REALLY BIG deal. We kept telling DS we were SO proud of him for doing poopy on the potty. We called all the grandparents so he could tell them. We gave him a "big" gift. And, we had been promising him a "big boy bed" so after he pooped on the potty, we converted his crib. He asked for presents every time he pooped for a week or so after that, so I just kept giving him small gifts (think $1 bin at Target) to reinforce it. He's been fully trained for 2 months now.

Potty training poop issue
Luckily, both of my boys mainly poop at home so I was able to catch them in the act. I would them place them on the potty.
For DS 1 In the beginning, it would make him stop but, after a couple of days we used a suppository and then they would go. It took a good 2-3.
For DS 2 - since he was 3 3/4 when he finally trained, he got the hang of it right away (but, has still had a couple of accidents when he wasn't paying attention and was in the other room).

Re: Potty training poop issue
This was an issue with DD. We'd fuss at her, offer rewards, everything. Finally our babysitter told us to just let it go and not make a big deal when she did it. So from then on DH and I (whoever was lucky enough to do the honors ) would simply clean her up, put clean underwear on her, and move on. I think within two days of that approach she was using the toilet.

Re: Potty training poop issue
i spent the year from 3 to 4 trying to get DS to poop on the potty. OMG. it was the summer of his 4th birthday i finally got him to go on the little potty and really b/c he was starting a preschool that wanted him fully trained.
I had to move his duck potty into his playroom one saturday after i saw him hunching over trying to hold in his poop. I had already told him no more pullups. he would be in underwear during the day but would ask for a pullup just to poop.
i had to literally force him to sit on the little potty and sit with him, rub his back and tell him he wouldnt fall in, nor would he die if he pooped in there. i wasnt moving until he did and about 40 min later he did. once he realized he was OK..it took a few more days of reminding him but he got it.
