Potty training: DD holds it until we put her in a diaper...

Need suggestions. We keep DD naked from the waist down during the day...she has peed on the potty several times. We just started last week. Obviously we can't stay home all the time, so I put a diaper on her when we leave the house and when we put her down for naps/bedtime.

She rarely makes a mistake...she either pees on the potty or refuses, but most of the time she holds it until we put a diaper on her. DH just put her down for bedtime and he said she soaked the diaper right when he put it on her.

Suggestions? How do we proceed? TIA.

Ava did this for a while and it just reaffirmed to me that she was capable of being potty trained. Just keep on doing what you're doing. It wasn't until I decided that we would do NO diapers (except at bedtime) that she really started to use the potty. I would put underwear on her at home and she would pee through it and then would freak. She learned quickly that she needed to use the potty. That being said, for outings, we would put on those thick crotched Gerber underwear with the vinyl undies over them. So no more diapers.

We stopped using diapers completely too. We did bottom naked in the house for three days straight and then started putting her in underwear to leave the house, bringing a portable potty with us, and of course, asking her if she had to go every 15 minutes.

Honestly, my DS was really stubborn when it came to potty training and we didn't force him. We tried to encourage him because physically he could do it but he just didn't want to. Finally I gave up and figured he'd do it when he was ready. And one day about eight or nine months later, he woke up and told me he wanted to use the potty and we haven't had one accident since - not during the day, naps, night time - never. He was instantly potty trained for pee and poop. I'm a firm believer in the fact that they will do it when they're ready and you shouldn't force it.

All underwear, all the time. When you go out, bring an extra set of underwear, clothes, etc. Don't forget socks because sometimes the pee runs right down the leg!

I did this with my DD. Woke up one day and told her no more diapers. We use a pull-up at night and tell her they are super special night time pull-ups only for night.

She takes 2 hour naps with no issues. She even wakes up with a dry pull-up after 10-12 hours sleep at night.

We have traveled all over and she's never had an accident outside the house. I even pulled over today so she could use my portable potty in the car because she told me she had to go after we left the house!

ETA: I did try those vinyl panty covers and HATED them It sounded like she was walking around with a bag of potato chips shoved down her pants! But they do work and containing the pee and saving her pants if she has an accident!

Thanks all! I took DD to the gym today with her big girl underwear on....no accidents and we were gone for 2 hours. I put her on the potty so many times before and after the gym...nothing. She went down for a nap and I ran up there when she woke up b/c she always goes pee/poop right away...sure enough she had soaked through her underwear and onto the crib sheet. No big deal, but then she held it for another few hours and peed in the potty once and then had an accident in our basement. Not sure what's going on...is she ready, is she not ready? I don't want to confuse her.

At night I would make a big deal, showing John that e had big boy underwear on so if he had to make peeps he had to get up, but, I would hide a pull up inside his pj bottoms so when I puled up his pants I pulled the pull up into place without him knowing. I think he had 2 "accidents" before he got the hang of it

One suggestion might be to wait until the summer because it is so easy to train them. They will be outside with dresses and can get the hang of it so much faster. This is when I was able to train dd.
