Potential bed bugs in Montauk Hotel? WWYD?
So, i was reading some recent Trip Advisor reviews on the hotel we will be staying at next week (Surf Club). One completely freaked me out bc it was saying that their room was infested with bedbugs!!!! I called the hotel right away and questioned them about it and they claimed that the person who wrote the review was crazy, there have never been bedbugs there, not to worry, blah, blah, blah. My DH thinks we should cancel our stay, but he had to struggle to get off of work, my DD is very excited, and we really need to get away. My questions-- would you still go? Would you go and prepare differently for your trip to prevent any bedbug issues? And, have you ever been to The Surf Club, and if so, what were your experiences there? Thank you!

I was never there. If you do go, leave all of your belongings in the car and check the bed (google what to look for). If there are no signs, you should be ok.Good luck. Try to have a good time!!

Potential bed bugs in Montauk Hotel? WWYD?
A large group of friends stayed there last week in multiple rooms and no one had any bed bug issues. They stay there every year.

Could be an angry person trying to get revenge...that happened to me when I was getting married. Long story short...they lied about conditions & things because they got caught stealing stuff & sneaking people into rooms so they didn't have to pay extra.

Any hotel can have bed bugs reported or not. Please check the bed, headboard, floor if possible, and dont put ur clothes in any of the drawers. It is one of those things u hafta be aware of but dont let it ruin ur vacay-have fun! :)

Take Tripadvisor reviews with a grain of salt. There is no way to verify the info- so it could be someone who is pizzed at the owners over something, or just someone looking to stir the pot for no reason at all. could even be someone who has a personal ax to grind with the owner- ex, disgruntled friend, etc
I wouldn't be too concerned and I wouldn't cancel my trip

You can get bed bugs from buying new clothes at the store, or sitting in a fabric chair at the doctor's office. I would look over the bed with the tips the ladies suggested, but I too would not cancel your trip over it.

Surf Club is a great hotel--I haven't stayed there but have been to the restaurant and bar numerous times and have seen the type of people that go there--I don't think they'd stand for bedbugs. I would definitely look at the mattress when you get there but I think you will be okay.

Just want to say that the type of person who goes somewhere, is no indication of a place having bedbugs or not.
to the OP, i would thoroughly check out your room (seams on headboard, mattress/box spring, drawers, carpet under bed) before bringing in your bags if you want some peace of mind. When you get home, take your suitcase directly to your laundry room and put all your clothes on high in the dryer for 30 minutes and carefully inspect all the crevices in your suitcase. If you or your DH have any bites, then chances are there were bedbugs - but hopefully there aren't and you'll be just fine

Re: Potential bed bugs in Montauk Hotel? WWYD?
I just came back from there a few weeks ago and I didn't get bed bugs.
I was with a large group of people and we had 3 different rooms, everything was clean.
I wouldn't be too worried, but I do always check every hotel bed before I lay in it and make sure my suitcase is cleaned out and laundry done asap once I get home.

Re: Potential bed bugs in Montauk Hotel? WWYD?
I would go if only ONE person said there were bedbugs. I unfortunately just had a bedbug issue in my house and it was devastating:( While in the 2 month process of trying to get rid of them we had a trip planned which involved staying in a hotel I was really apprehensive about staying but we did and I am glad. I did take lots of precautions to try not to bring anymore home with me. 1. don't put your suitcase on the bed floor or furniture. Most hotels provide those fold up metal holders for your suitcase. Keep it there if you can. 2. check mattress and sheets for any stains 3. When you get home put everything you brought with you in the dryer for 30 minutes. Check your suitcase and anything else that cant go in the dryer for them. I am sure you will probably be fine

I agree with the others, I would thoroughly inspect the room (you can google what to look for exactly) when you arrive and follow the tips people listed above. If it's just one review I wouldn't worry too much, could be another hotel trying to steal business. I always use those luggage racks and never put my clothes in the dressers, although I wouldn't even if I were 100% sure there are no bed bugs, that just grosses me out regardless.
Try not to stress over this and have a great time!

I agree- I would not cancel!! There could have been a crazy customer or a competative restaurant/hotel- You never know! That place has good reviews from many people I know.

I agree as well. Also, if this person only has one review I'd take it with a grain of salt!
