Post partum umbilical hernia
Has anyone dealt with this? Did it go away on its own, or did you need surgery, and if so, what was the recovery like? I'm 4 months post partum and it still has not gone away. I'm considering seeing a surgeon, but I'd really like to avoid surgery if possible since I don't want to not be able to lift and take care of my baby for 6 weeks. But of course I'm also worried about not having it fixed if it could cause problems.

Re: Post partum umbilical hernia
My story is a little different. I had no idea I had one. Nothing looked or felt amiss. 5 weeks post partum I had an awful gallstone attack that landed me in the ER and I was admitted for surgery to remove my gallbladder the next day. When the surgeon went in to do the surgery laproscopically he found the umbilical hernia and repaired it right then and there. He told me about it when I woke up.
Recovery was fine- I also had the gallbladder out- I was home that night...sore and slow moving but not in any excruciating pain. I took my pain meds that night only.
I was fine with motrin from then on. Went shopping and out to dinner with DH the next day. Was back at work the next week (that was my plan to go back at 6 weeks pp since i had no paid time off at all)
The only thing was, I could not lift anything 10 lbs or heavier for 6 weeks. Which was hard with a baby and a car seat and going back to work.
Other than that, it was fine- and that was with a gallbladder removal to boot!

Your story sounds very similar to mine! By any chance did you use dr vosswinkel? To the OP, he's an amazing surgeon. Highly highly recommend.

No. I was admitted to Good Sam through the ER and they assigned the surgeon on call. Dr Way Lee. He was excellent, but I really had no choice as it was an emergency. I'm glad he was a good surgeon though!

Does he only do emergency surgery? Or would he take me as a patient in a non-emergency situation?

Post partum umbilical hernia
I'm pretty sure they don't go away on their own. My sis has one and she is going soon to get it fixed. Her DS is almost 5.
She is 100% physically active and it doesn't bother her except for more cosmetic reasons but they can get worse.

I was a non emergency... My general doc sent me to him. My mom also used him and was non emergency. Go make an appt with him. Won't be disappointed.

Re: Post partum umbilical hernia
I had one and was told that generally you don't have to do anything unless it is causing symptoms. About a year and a half after my son was born, it was causing a lot of discomfort so I went for a consult. The surgeon told me at that point I needed to have it repaired because it was now causing trouble. Surgery and recovery were very easy. I had it done over Christmas break (I am a teacher) and felt totally fine when I went back to school.
