Pop Tarts anyone?
I found an on the pregnancy board about parents who feed their kids pop tarts *gasp*.
This really bugged me. DS doesnt eat them all the time, maybe once a week but he likes them and I think they are a better treat than chips or candy.
I know before I had a child I had all these idealistic views about what he would and wouldnt eat. Now I am just happy if I can find something he likes.
Please tell me I am not alone.

I think it's easy when you're pregnant to have all of these great ideals oh how you're going to do things with your child but once they get here you start to realize some things can't be 100% all of the time. Like I never thought I would be giving my 1 year old chocolate but when she comes to me looking all cute saying "chocolate" how can I not give her a piece. It's a rare treat but a piece of chocolate on a holiday isn't going to kill her. I don't know if I would personally give my child pop tarts, more because I think they're gross but I'm sure there are things that I give my daughter that you or someone else might Bottom line is it's you're kid and you get to feed him what you want, that's the beauty of being the parent.

Yes I think when we are pregnant we say "I will never feed my child such and such or let them watch tv, or stay up too late." Much easier when the little one is in the tummy. My son was on a kick where he would only eat waffles for breakfast with butter and syrup! GASP.... I would rather him eat that, than nothing at all.

Re: Pop Tarts anyone?
Granted my son is a bit younger than yours but as of now I won't be buying him pop tarts.
In all fairness though I am having a tough time controlling what he is eating or trying now that he getting older and wants what others want. Like this weekend we had a party and the older kids were drinking soda, so he asked me for soda. He had no idea what soda was before then! So I gave him a glass of seltzer. I know my days are numbered with controlling too much of what he will have every now and again.
But if I don't bring it in the house he won't have it.
I'm all about everything in moderation, and the "sometimes" treat but to answer the question.... thats a no to pop tarts. But again right now my son thinks a treat is a cereal bar, we'll see in a few years....
ETS: I think posting a is uncalled for though....

I am so happy Ryan had no interest in soda whatsoever, that was one of my big things. I agree with you about bringing things in the house. We never have sugary cereals or sugary snacks in the house. Once a week after his swimming class if he wants a pop tart from the machine I let him have it , and I actually prefer he pick that over Cheetos which he LOVES. I might get a double for that

Re: Pop Tarts anyone?
Wow- well give me the worst mom award because my son who is 15 months old has eaten alot worse than pop tarts (not to exclude pop tarts-because he has had them as well...)
He loves fruits and veg.- is a great eater- and is actually a little underweight for his age- therefore I see nothing wrong with giving him a special treat once a day!!!

Re: Pop Tarts anyone?
I don't give my kids Pop Tarts because they wouldn't last more than 2 seconds in my house. I grew up on Pop Tarts - EVERY SINGLE day of junior high school. Chocolate frosting, cinnamon, vanilla frosting...never fruit. We would grab them as we left the house for the bus.
I was always a size 2-4 until I was about 28. I also didn't have a cavity until I was 23.
My sister (who stopped having sugar for 6+ years) caved on her daughter's 2nd birthday. She let her have her first taste with a cupcake. Followed by another & another. Now her daughter asks for "treats" all of the time. I wish she would've called it a snack, because it reminds me of a parrot.
Sometimes you need to do what you have to just to get them to eat. Everyone learns that when they have kids. Not a bad mom at all - you're a more "enlightened" one.

Re: Pop Tarts anyone?
Hmm, as we were running to get out of the house today, my 2-1/2 year old had a strawberry pop-tart.
Is that what he normally eats? Absolutely not. He eats rather well and healthy, but sometimes in a pinch, somethings just gotta give, KWIM?

You are not alone. Sometimes you have to give then what they will eat, even if it is vanilla wafers for dinner

Re: Pop Tarts anyone?
Sometimes, if you try to control you kids diets too much, it backfires. We're trying the idea of mostly healthy food, but snacks are OK once in a while. That way, snacks aren't the "forbidden food" that they wind up craving, just because they can't have it at home. (Like all parents, I hope my idea works... )
Tonight, DS had potato chips and Weat Thins for dinner, and a huge bowl of blueberries for snack.
No PopTarts, only because I don't think they would ever get to him... I used to live on them in college.

Re: Pop Tarts anyone?
I don't give Noah pop tarts, but if gnawing on one kept him quiet for 10 minutes...BRING IT ON POP TART!! I do give him chocolate covererd rice cakes, cookies with chocolate on them, what else...well, pretty much anything that will appease him for a few minutes!
I do think that the idealistic views you have of parenthood when you are pregnant with your first are always a load of rubbish. For instance, right now Noah is sitting on the floor playing with a HUGE pile of CD's...I always said, I would never let him play with things like that...but guess what IT MAKES HIM HAPPY. So HAPPY HE SHALL BE!
I have a freezer full of home made baby food but this kid goes through phases, right now he doesn't want to be fed anything...so I have to give him all foods that he can eat with his hands....so fish sticks and tortellini it is!
OOH and the CD's...well he has moved from Abba onto the Beatles!

Re: Pop Tarts anyone?
Oh puh-lease!!
People that at Pop tarts obviously don't have children of their own that they have to feed 3 times daily.
Having a finicky 5 year old, let me tell ya...PopTarts is the LEAST of our dietary problems.
When I was pregnant and lived in my dream world of the perfect child rearing years that loomed ahead of me, I too thought I would NEVER let my children eat "junk food".
Fast forward 5 years later... bring it on, PopTarts. Not every day. Not even every week. But a poptart, cookie, piece of cake every now and then "ain't gonna hurt them". We all ate it (I know I did) and we're all here talking about it.
So Pauline, come over my house, bring Ryan, and we'll stuff them FULL of PopTarts together!!!!!!! No one call CPS on us now!!!!!!

Patrick has had Pop-Tarts. I don't see anything wrong with it. Truth be told it's nobodys buisness what you give your kids. Would I prefer if Patrick would ask me for REAL fruit yes. But, that's not happening anytime soon.
