POLICE qUESTION
is it normal for a suffolk county policeman to knock on your door(i live in Nassau) to do a backround check on someone who wants to become a police officer in suffolk county..Police officer said he lived next door to me??????????

yes but the neighbor should have given you a heads up. My moms neighbor is going to be NYC police officer and they came to her house.

I'm in the process of getting FBI top secret clearance. They should have a letter signed by the neighbor. My neighbors were asked about my background.
If you're not comfortable asking, you should tell him to come back once you've confirmed with the neighbor.

The officer said that the guy "use to be my neighbor" he no longer lives next door to me...

i believe that as part of the application for those types of jobs you have to list prior addresses and also have to list someone to verify your residence there.
I don't live in NY, but a former next door neighbor of ours listed DH on an application for a police or fbi job in the DC area (where we live). But - he emailed and gave us a heads up.
You shouldn't answer any questions you aren't comfortable answering though!

Yup, totally normal. When my brother was going through the process for the NYPD they knocked on several neighbors doors, not just the ones my brother had asked in advance if it was ok to put their name down.

I've had agents from NSA show up at my job and aske questions about PhD students, and about Syrian students from I don't remember which agency. They've never given me a heads up, but I always ask for their ID, look the up the # myself, call, verify they really work for them, then talk. I think for a local police reference it's weird not to get some advance notice.
