my windows look terrible. worse since i tried the dumb sheers under the valance.

i can't imagine what plain old panels will look like.

please help me!

i keep finding things i like on craigslist, but have a black dining set with beigey cushioned chairs in my head. so i can't commit to anything else.

I wish you zoomed in on your valance - what color is your valance?

eta: I don't think the sheers look bad - maybe try a colored sheer?

THe valance actually has greens / golds and browns in it. the colors go nicely, i just think they are too short... it's such a huge window, i think they look ridiculous!

I can't watch the video at work but, check out overstock.com for dining sets. They have a ton under $900.00

Rachel are you willing to just paint the dining set that you have black? It would save you a lot of money. I think the set is nice and if it was all black it would look awesome. Maybe you could even put new material on the chairs as well. A little sanding, some primer, some black paint and you have a new set. Chat Icon

And I don't think that the sheers look bad. I'm going to look at the video again now.

I was going to make the same suggestion. Strip the finish off of the furniture or just the legs of the table and paint them black.
Alternatively, paint them red first, then do a black over where you use a tool to scratch them a bit so you can see the red under the black a little. I think that is your least expensive option and will coordinate everything.

As for the large window, I would keep the sheers and get two large panels in a red or yellow/gold color to go with the rug in the dining room. I would get small top curtains that run straight across to replace the ones with the fringe, but keep the same length. I love the video.

curtains?

I would do one colored curtains because I feel with the rug, pottery barn piece, dark floor, brick of fireplace, there are a lot of textures and colorings... maybe a beige would do...

For the table what do you think of this one?
Craigs list find, I kept your video on pause on the potterybarn piece and think it could match to it well. IMO woods do not need to match exactly as long as they are in the same family. External Image

thats a great idea and the money you save on buying a new table can be used to do a few other updates or decor purchases you may want to do in the room!

You know, i actually thought about painting it myself. i am afraid of failure. i couldn't even give that table away (it was 800.00 five years ago) if i screwed it up.

i am not happy with the size of it though for a dining room table. it's too small. that's the size with the leaf IN.

i went to christmas tree shoppe and got 4 long panels that i actually really like. they are brown with a thin greeny stripe and a tan in it.
it feels much more closed and cozy in there now. so, that's an improvement.

yes, i live in wantagh - D section - duckpond. i am near DavaDay. love the area, but my house... not such a fan of, unfortunately.

my other house in lindy was not an open floor plan, and i think i like that living better. i could be more bold with my colors and separate my 'looks' more from room to room. this open-ness is frustrating and squashes my love to decorate.
i always thought i'd want open layouts, now i am sorry to say (learning the hard way) that i don't.

enough of my sad-sack vent session!

thanks for helping!

And - the JCPENNY set was EXACTLY what i had in mind! maybe i can convince myself to just paint my current set... i already have new fabric to re-upolster (SP?) my chairs

oh... what do you think of this table?

how about staining the wood of this set you have. I don't know how much that would cost, but it may be worth considering as an inexpensive alternative

ETA: If you don't think that set is big enough, check out Ikea or Overstock.com

I love this set and think it would look great. What about a round table? I also think maybe light curtains would look nice and maybe take down the valance.
