Please settle this debate for me...(re:cats)

Do cats know their names?

I am convinced Chloe knows her name and DH says I'm crazy. So when she responds to me is it her name she is responding to or just my voice?

Re: Please settle this debate for me...(re:cats)

I'm with the responding to name, not just the voice.
My cat understood a lot of what I said :
want to get brushed - he would run to where I kept the brush.
time to sleep - he would jump on my bed and settle in for the night.

I think they learn a lot of our language because we speak to them as if they were human.

Of course he also responded to the can opener and the sound of the doorbell.

My cats always knew their name.
I have 2 now and they definitely know the difference between their names.
If I call out the boys name the girl won't look and vice versa.

They also know other words like Treat, Eat, etc.

Interesting, thank you.

Chloe definitely knows her name. The reason I can't win this argument is because like most cats, she responds to me when SHE wants to. She is the best little girl ever, but she is stubborn sometimes and is not helping my case! Chat Icon

Same for mine. Except when they deliberately ignore me. Chat Icon

Re: Please settle this debate for me...(re:cats)

They definitely know their names.

Case in point:

I call Bella and she looks over at me even if she doesn't come. Izzy doesn't even care.

I call Izzy and he will give me I love you eyes even if he doesn't come. Bella will totally ignore me if I call for Izzy.

Oh yes, he does. I can call his name (and I use the same ton of voice with my DS) and he comes running!

haha, we have been debating this too.

He has a human name and we like to call him other names to see if he responds. We call George, Joe, Sam, etc. and he doesn't respond.

Mostly he knows when we shake the treats container he comes running!!!
