Please recommend an awesome birthday present for my soon-to-be 8 year old nephew!
I used to know him so well, but my sister relocated to CA with her job last August, and now I have no idea what he's really into. My sister is not much help--she works long hours and wasn't able to tell me much, either... 
I want to get him something that he'll really enjoy. If anyone can suggest something, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much!

A gamestop card is always great for an 8 yr old if they have video games. DOes he have a DS or a PSP yet? You can get him the system too

He has a Wii, but I went that route last year and bought him Guitar Hero. The Game Stop card is a good idea, but I'm hoping I can find him something a little different this year.

He's not really into sports. He's fascinated by skateboarding and surfing right now (the CA influence, I guess  ) but I think my sister would murder me if I bought him a skateboard!

My just-turned-eight son's favorite gifts in the last year have been:
Magic Set (Melissa and Doug Deluxe)
Drum Kit
Sour Candy Factory
New wheels/bearings for his skateboard
Trip to skateboard park
New video camera (they have small ones for under 100)
Cold hard cash... NOT gift cards..but cash.
