Please help me figure out a way to get my son to take his meds

My son has a nasty ear infection. The doctor prescribed some kind of liquid antibiotic that apparently doesn't taste too good, because the first 2 times I tried to give it to him, he immediately spit it out and threw up. Is it bad if I try to mix it into his bottle - does that dilute it? Any other suggestions of how to get him to keep it down? I have already lost an entire day of him having had it and he is in so much pain.Chat Icon

i doubt you have one handy but when i was babysitting and the child had the same problem the mother bought one of those droppers and he acutally liked taking it with the dropper...not sure but worth a try. Or i would call the doctor and see what he says

I know, exactly - but at this point, he is getting NOTHING because even after he throws it up, I still can't give him more for fear of overdosing.

That is exactly what I use - the dropper! A few weeks ago I gave him amoxicillin for a strep throat and he took it beautifully from the dropper. But, I guess it tasted better than what he is getting now (I had to switch antibiotics because he was allergic to the amox).

Can you call your pharmacy and see if they can flavor the medicine? I have seen it advertised, they may charge you a few extra dollars but if it gets him to take it than it's worth it. They also may have some advice on how to give him the meds, and whether it would be all right to put it in his bottle.Chat Icon
