Please help me. Anyone who knows someone who had prostate cancer....
What was their treatment and did the cancer metastesize (sp) in the bones around the area?
My dad went for a cat scan today and also a bone scan. THANK GOD the cat scan came back clean, but the bone scan did not. The area around his lower back has some abnormalities to it, and I'm scared that the cancer has spread to the bones around the prostate. There is still a chance that it's from a previous injury that it's showing up or arthritis (not that he has it that he knows of) or it could have been a poor image, but I am just terrified and anyone who can give me info on this would really help. Thank you.

My father had prostate cancer 4 years ago and is now cancer free. He had radioactive seeds implanted as treatment. I think its really good that the cat scan came back normal. I honestly don't remember my father getting a bone scan so I don't have much info on that. I do remember with my father, there was concern it had spread to his bladder(I don't remember why), but thankfully it had not. I am very sorry your family is going through this. My FIL went through treatment in 2005.
It was a radiation treatment every day for 8 or 12 weeks (I can't remember).
It made him a little tired, but other than that no real side effects.
As a side note - he could NOT hold his grandkids at all during the weeks he was going through treatment without a lead blanket in between them. Apparently some traces of radiation could be transfered - especially if they sat on his lap.
I think that was the hardest part for him.
His bone scan also did not come back clean, but we were told that's pretty common for his age (he was 58 at the time).
It did not metastisize.
The radiation was successful and he hasn't had any issues in subsequent check-ups.
This is really a very treatable form of cancer if caught early.
Don't lose hope.

My dad had prostate cancer and had the seeds put in and they worked wonders! It basically shrank his prostate to the point that it is no longer there. He has been cancer free for almost 3 years now
He could not have his prostate removed because of his age. He was 72 at the time of his diagnosis and the doctors said they dont go in and remove the prostate for anyone who is over 65. Its a very tough surgerya nd hard to recover from, so the older you are, the more likely you are to develop complication from the surgery

My dad had the whole removal in 2005. his levels were so high that the seed treatment was not an option.
But - if I remeber correctly his bone scan didnt show any abnormalities.
Prostate cancer is, I hate to say common, but it is more prevelant then you'd think. There are many options out there for treatments. My uncle just had one that was completely "robotic" meaning they never opened him up as they did my dad.

Did he have a PET scan? That would show more definitively if there were any mets.
Also, I dont know what doctors he is seeing, but I would highly reccomend leaving LI and going to Drs at Sloane Kettering or Columbia or another one of the major hospitals.

Thanks for sharing your stories, everyone, I really appreciate it.
So, we got FANTASTIC news today that it has not spread anywhere. My dad went back for another bone scan today, and they determined that what they found was from an old injury. Thank god I will share your stories with my dad, though because he was very curious to see what other people have opted as treatment.
He is going in to Sloane Kettering to have this taken care of, so I will keep you all updated. Thank you so much again
