Please Help me and DH plan our Virgina/WashingtonDC summer trip!!!

I believe it or not have never been to our Nations capitol. I have been to a lot of places- all over the East coast, California, Alaska, Guatamala, Mexico, The South Pacific, etc, but never to DC or VA. I do not mind staying outside of DC for a hotel, any advice, areas to stay in, we want a nice hotel, but not a dump, but nothing to really break the bank- we do not want to spent 300.00 a night or more on a hotel- places to see, places to eat, etc. TIA! We are planning on going the last few weeks of August, 2008. Thisis when DH is off from work, he is a teacher and teaches in the summer too.

Re: Please Help me and DH plan our Virgina/WashingtonDC summer trip!!!

I took DH last year because he had never been. I wanted to do all of the touristy things because he had never seen anything.

We stopped in Baltimore on the way down and went to the Baltimore aquarium. It's my favorite aquarium and we had a great time.

We then headed to D.C., where we stayed in the L'Enfant Plaza. It's a great hotel, and close to all of the museums. I got a good deal online. I've also stayed in Embassy Suites D.C., which is also very nice.

We first headed to the Washington zoo, which we loved. Pretty much everything in D.C. is free! All of the national museums, the zoo, etc. There are only a handful of private museums (like the Spy museum) that charge admission. After the zoo we headed to my favorite museum, the air and space museum. DH loved it too. We then headed to the Natural History museum...DH loved that, but I got kind of bored.

Another day we headed to the White House to show DH, saw the Washington monument, and went to my favorite memorial--the Roosevelt memorial. We also went to Georgetown and walked around, ate, and did some shopping. Stop into the Third Edition bar that was in St. Elmo's Fire.

Any questions, just ask! I lived on DuPont Circle for a while (though DH made fun of me because this was almost 10 years ago, so I forgot my way around!).

I dont know how much help I'm going to be but when i want to DC about 10 years ago we stayed at a Holiday Inn in DC it wasnt right in the heart of DC which was much more expensive but it was by some sort of circle. We were warned that we needed to make sure we walked "in the right direction" otherwise we could find ourselves in a bad neighborhood but we never had a problem and the hotel was clean and fineChat Icon

If you don't mind staying outside of DC, try near the Pentagon in Arlington, or Old Town Alexandria which is just a ferry ride away from Georgetown.

I love Old Town. In the summer there are all sorts of performers near the pier, people walking their dogs, etc. As well as tons of great restaurants. And it's easy access to DC. Plus, there's the Kingstown Metro station on the blue line which will take you right to the Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery, the Smithsonian and Eastern Market.

FM me if you have any questions - I'll answer as best I can!

I work for a hotel company and I cover the hotels in the DC area. On the weekends you should be able to get rates for $150 or less, on the weekdays they increase bc of business travelers. This summer we are projecting light occupancy in July and August so you can probably get the best rates then.

I love Old Town Alexandria. We have 2 hotels there - the Sheraton Suites and a brand new Westin. They are both nice. Its very easy to get to DC from there.

We went in Oct 2006. The majority of places are no charge. We stayed in Arlington at the Courtyard Marriott. I don't remember how much but it was def under $200 per night (i think around $150). It was a block to the metro and about a 10 minute ride into DC. Arlington was a really cute little town and had alot of restaurants/bars within walking distance. We barely drove while we were there.

ITA!!! I lived in Northern VA and worked in DC for 7 years before moving here to CO. Old Town Alexandria is really really nice, and there's an Embassy Suites right across from the King Street metro station. They have free continental breakfasts. It's a quick ride into DC from Alexandria too. Arlington is also a cool place to stay - lots of bars and places to hang out.

Try to go to the International Spy Museum in DC. It's pretty cool! (and that's where DH proposed to me Chat Icon ) and if I remember right, it's right by China Town where you can get some great dim sum.

We recently stayed at the Marriot in Fairfax, Virginia. The hotel room was inexpensive and it included the conceirge. The room was immaculate, brand new and the bed was sooo comfy. The hotel was totally renovated recently. There is a pool, gym, restaurant, bar and a starbucks.

The hotel is right across the street from a Mall.
