Please HELP!

We are at our wits end.

Scout gets up every single night between 3 and 5 am. He puts his paws on DH's chest to get him up and take him out. Mind you DH never gets to bed before midnight, and gets up at 6am to catch the 6:56 train.

DH lets him out and he pees.

Then either he is allowed back in our room - and wants to play. So DH gates him in the den. At 5am he will start barking because he wants to eat. This in turn wakes the baby, who will not go back to sleep. Now I am up, she's up, none of us have slept enough and Scout is the only one who isn't cranky.

HOW can I get him to sleep through the night???? Before bed we take him for long walks, short walks, medium walks - no change. I take him almost daily to the park so he is definitely getting exercise. He doesn't eat or drink past 6 or 7 pm - well he has water in his bowl but doesn't touch it.

HELP! PLEASE!!

Re: Please HELP!

Tough Call...I would say crate him, but he's never been crated. If you want to try it you can borrow Misty's crate for a few days. Or you could try gating him in the den when you go to bed.Chat Icon

Re: Please HELP!

He was crated when he was a puppy. IF we don't let him upstairs, he will bark and wake Alex at 3 or 4am.
He is taken for a walk before we go to bed. And he doesn't drink after 7pm usually.
He's been doing this for months now. I thought boarding him when we went away would "cure" him but is hasn't.

I think now it's just a bad habit and I don't know how to break it...!

I would def crate him as well. This way he can not disturb you guys and the baby. He will also get on the same scheudle as you and you wont have to be on the dogs schedule anymore.

Re: Please HELP!

How old is Scout? My dog started sleeping throught the night when he was a little over a year old, he is 18 months now. We make sure we get him good and tired during the day and he passes out at like 9ish and is good til the next morning when I get up at 7-8. But he is also a Mastiff and thery are a little lazy.
I say, make sure he is well exercised, limit his water after dinner and I guess you guys do walk him before bed, right?

DUh I just read your other post...so, yeah I say either get him nice and tired or crate him to break the cycle.

What if you bring the crate upstairs (I think you said that is where the bedrooms are) and crate him there?

I think even if you crate him and leave him downstairs after a couple of nights of barking and no one letting him out - he will get the idea Chat Icon

I know it will stink that is a couple of nights - but maybe it will work Chat Icon

Try to make a habit of the nighttime crate- give him a treat for going in before bed and put it in another room. Use a sound soother if nessecary.
Katie is crated at night.
