please be my thesaurus
at moments like this, i pull out my "english wasn't my first language" card that's my story, and i'm sticking to it.
what's the word(s) i'm looking for?
if i understand correctly, a contingency is a FUTURE event. what is it when it is CURRENTLY happening?
i'm writing a letter where i have to describe the actual event in present tense. if contingency is the act happening in the future, what is it when it is happening and/or happened?
i hope that wasn't confusing lol

I feel like I need to know what you're trying to say? Like, what is the sentence? Yes, a contingency is a possible future scenario, but it's more commonly used to described a provision for the possibility of something happening.

Re: please be my thesaurus
i'm sorry... i meant to say past tense, not present tense.
what i want to say is:
we appreciate how you managed the "contingencies" while your District Manager was away.
what will follow will be something along the lines of:
you properly handled stepping up to the plate when hurricane harvey hit, you handled a surprise fire drill, and you handled having a skeleton crew during both of these things... blah, blah, blah. thank you for doing an amazing job in delivering the purple promise.

I would just use "unexpected situations" or "unforeseen situations" in place of "contingencies".
