play dates - pre-k
How do play dates work in pre-k? DDs school gave us little slips that we put in the book bag if she is going to go home with a friend for a playdate and we've talked with some of the parents about playdates and setting them up soon.
My question is do they go to their friends house without a parent? If yes, what happens with car seats?
If parents are supposed to be there and I am a working mom do playdates happen with grand parents instead?
DD really wants to have a playdate with someone and i am just unsure what happens.
THanks.

Re: play dates - pre-k
I wouldn't let my pre-k kid go home with anyone from her class, nor would I let her stay there without me.
That seems very strange to me
IMO playdates are to be set up on your own time, not through school, at a time and place that is convenient for you and the other parent.

Thanks - the concept was seeming strange to me too which is why i wanted to ask others.
Basically they aren't any different during the school year than when we planned them during the summer.

I completely agree.
I have always set up playdates with my son's friend's parents directly.
ETA -- to make this easier on the parents and to encourage it, the school sent out a "contact sheet" after getting everyone's permission with names, phone numbers, and addresses -- so we could invite each other to birthday parties, and we could call and schedule playdates... so they helped us to communicate and open that line of communication but stayed out of the planning and implementation of it for their own liability, I would say.

I would call the parent directly and try to set up something that works with your schedule and go from there.
It does seem strange although dd goes to nursery school with a few friends whose families we know well already. In that case I would have no issue letting her go home with them assuming they have an extra car seat which most do. For someone I don'tknowl I would want to take her and stay myself.

Re: play dates - pre-k
We do lots of playdates with classmates from preschool. They are never drop off.
My older child started drop off playdates mid-Kindergarten.

I agree with this. All pre-k play dates we've had were set up with the other parents and there was never a drop off. We all stayed with our kids. I don't even know at what age I would feel comfortable letting my child go to someone else's house without me.

That's so strange. I wouldn't send my child home in a car with someone else for a playdate. At this age, playdates should be set up through the parents.

play dates - pre-k
my son is 4- turns 5 in about a month- and he's in pre-k. i would say its a little strange. for his playdates after school, i always stay, so i usually pick him up at school and then drive him to whereever we're meeting. although... there are a couple kids in his class that i know pretty well- so i would be ok if the mom wanted to bring DS to her house after school to play with her son. as long as she had an extra car seat and whatnot. but DS's school is a co-op so the parents take turns helping in the classroom, going on the field trips with the kids--- so you get to know the other parents and kids pretty well, so its a little bit different.

play dates - pre-k
I always arranged playdates directly with the parents (and still do).
DS did do one "drop off" playdate when he was in pre-k. His best friend was out of daycare for awhile since his mom had a baby so she asked if he could come over one weekday afternoon and play. She picked him up and brought him home.
He was there a couple of hours and cried a couple of times - he wasn't ready for a drop off play date yet (he was 4.5).
He's done one this year in K (it was for a b-day party on a weekday) and it went a lot differently (no tears).
