Plasma TV question

Is this a good deal? My DH is nuts because we don't have the money, but he's very interested in it because he says it's a good deal?

It's a Hitachi 42" Plasma. I don't know anything about the brand. Personally I'd rather buy a name brand if I'm going to spend that kind of money but that's just me.

Anyway it's a $1,600 TV, with his employee discount it's $400 off and then he'd get an additional $400 with a mail-in-rebate. So the TV will only cost $800 in the end. (He works at Best Buy P/T) What do you think? Thanks!

Re: Plasma TV question

It is a good deal??? I know nothing about Plasma or LCD TV's. I heard LCD is better?

Well, I know it's a "brand" name, but all I hear people talking about is Panasonic, Sony, etc. I've never heard anyone say anything about Hitachi.

Thanks! Chat Icon

Re: Plasma TV question

Great deal or not, $800 is a lot of money if you don't have it to spend. It's not like it's an investment that you can sell and it's not like you can't live without it. That's just my opinion. I know that's not what you were asking, but I threw my 2 cents in anyway.

Re: Plasma TV question

it doesn't need to be a name brand to be good.

The deal IMO is good but thats just looking at price without consider what kind of specs the model has

personally, if you can't afford wait as prices will only continue to fall by the time you "may" be ready.

I don't know about the brand, but $800 for a 42 inch sounds like an awesome deal to me!

Is your DH back to work full time?
Are you guys caught up w/all your stuff you were having trouble with?
If you are 100% set with your finances & your DH is working full time again, then I tink its a great deal. If you guys have EXTRA money floating around, then its a good deal. If you need to charge it...or use money that should be used for something else than NO its not.
I would NEVER even consider it if I were experiencing financial trouble or myself or my DH out of work.
To me a fancy TV is not going to make me happy.

I agree. It's a TV not a necessity.

Doesn't he play games? Isn't a plasma bad for a gamer?

Also does he pay tax before or after his discount?

Gosh, BestBuy must be such a bad place to have an extra money PT job for a guy!

Re: Plasma TV question

Considering your situation, I wouldn't buy it right now. Besides, plasma tv's are on their way out because the LCD tv's are so much better.
It would be smarter to wait until you have the $$$ for an LCD TV. IMO.

ITA.

Additionally, I would never buy plasma screen TVs. Plasmas will go bad over time - much more quickly than an LCD. The technology isn't well developed yet - an LCD TV will last much longer than a plasma screen. Most plasmas will start to burn out after a few years.
