Plane Drama
Has anyone ever been involved in an unnerving situation while on an airplane?
~Aggressive/suspicious passenger/conflicts ~Extreme turbulence where people actually were injured ~Emergency landings
There are so many things that go on that don't make the news. I was just wondering if anyone here had any bad experiences to share. And if so, did it change your mind about flying?

Re: Plane Drama
Years ago, when I was coming home from Aruba with my family, our plane kept circling to dump fuel before landing. Apparently, our brakes were malfunctioning...when we finally landed safely, I noticed there was a crew of fire engines and rescue vehicles all around.
Another time we had severe turbulance down to Orlando, Florida and this old woman kept screaming ORLANDO!!! ORLANDO!!! I guess it's funny now that I think about it...
I still fly...things haven't changed...

Re: Plane Drama
i had a couple incidents-
emergency landing because there was a weird "smell" from the cabin - but everyone remained calm and it was fine
aborted landing- we started to land then went back in the air again...that was scary but thank god they did that because we landed with not enough room so we went back up again
nothing else really stands out...
flying is soo safe...it really is....i have heard worse stores than mine but those people are still flying
think of how many car accidents you have had..or know of...doesnt keep me from driving

Re: Plane Drama
Coming back to JFK from a business trip we were circling because of bad weather. While we were circling one of the engines was struck by lightening. Scariest thing that has ever happened to me on a plane. There was a small flame and then it went away. I hate to fly in general but have to do it whether I like it or not.

Re: Plane Drama
I've flown a LOT. the only incident I ever encountered was on a flight returning from a business trip in Boston. the pilot had to abort the landing because of the horrble weather (very windy and pouring rain). that was pretty scary it was a small plane and we got knocked around pretty good. I said a little prayer when we finally did land

Re: Plane Drama
My DH has been through it all since he flies weekly, both domestically and internationally.
*He's lost engines (while flying to China. They had to make an emergency landing in Alaska.)
*He's been asked to sit behind suspicious passengers (he's pretty strong looking and happened to be wearing a law enforcement t-shirt, so they assumed he was in law enforcement.)
*and he's in severe turbulance all the time.
He's always got stories!!!
It doesn't faze him though.

Re: Plane Drama
I have only had turbulence problems and even that wasn't too severe.
Yes, we don't hear about all of the bad incidents, but just think about how many flights land safely every day. We don't hear about every car accident either, but I venture to say we all still get in a car just about every day.

Re: Plane Drama
I have had planes turn back and deplane and once there was such bad turbulance something in my carry-on was broken. I never really thought about not flying though. I don't particularly love it but I prefer it to driving long distances.

Re: Plane Drama
We lost an engine coming back from London and had to turn back!!! We were *almost* at the halfway point and it was "safer" to go back. I swear, if I could have swam home, I would have.
I absolutely HATE to fly!!!!

Re: Plane Drama
We were headed to Frankfurt from Paris, on our way home. About 30 minutes into the flight, the pilot announces that since there is something wrong with the right wing (the side we were sitting on), we were turning around to CDG. DID YOU HAVE TO TELL ME THE EFFING PLANE IS BROKEN!?!?!? Although we got another night in Paris at Lufthana's expense, it was at a little airport hotel, so far from the train we couldn't go out and enjoy it.

Re: Plane Drama
I've definitely had more plane drama then my share - throughout childhood and as an adult.
An emergency landing in Maine, coming back from Israel, because the brakes were failing.
Slamming down on runway so hard that all the oxygen masks popped down
Having quite a few experiences with suspicious looking people in recent years that I was pretty much terrified to get on the plane (even though I did)
In recent years - there have been two medical emergencies on planes DH and I were on where he's assisted - on our HM, it got us bumped up to First Class!
And probably the coup de grace - dislocating my knee and tearing all the ligaments in my leg on an international flight - and no - I was not doing anything inappropriate!!
