Placental insufficiency & Level II & AFP
My NT came back good but my AFP came back (we did twice) 1 in 180 for down syndrome and 1 in 274 for spinal cord problems. The first time we did AFP (4 days apart) the down syndrome was fine and the spinal cord part was better at 1 in 400. The genetics specialist said this means little, elevated is elevated and the risk is about the same - she said the dr should not have tested twice. We did early Level II today at 17.5 weeks and everything was measuring perfectly. I do not want an amnio. They said my placenta appeared to be insufficient and they want me to take a baby aspirin daily. They said that this will be monitored and the drs can help baby since they are aware of it. baby may be born small or premature? I will be going back for another level II at 20 weeks as originally scheduled.
any experience with this?

Re: Placental insufficiency & Level II & AFP
My NT scan was fine, but my AFP came back elevated. I had my level II at 17 weeks and everything looked fine. I did opt to have the amnio as peace of mind. Everything was perfect and DD is a happy, healthy 15 month old. I did read that the AFP has alot of false positives.

Re: Placental insufficiency & Level II & AFP
Crashing, but I had a 31w5d preemie last year due to severe pre eclampsia.
At my annual appointment this year, my OBGYN said I will have to take baby aspirin every day with my next pregnancy. They believe that placenta issues can cause prematurity and that baby aspirin helps prevent that.

Re: Placental insufficiency & Level II & AFP
I had my first at 32 weeks, due to abruptio placenta. But I had no issues my entire pregnancy, they had no idea it was going to happen.
With my second, I got progesterone shots every week. And had a sonogram every 2 weeks. Dd #2 came at 38 weeks, 9 days before my scheduled csection, but perfectly healthy.
