Placenta Previa?
I am NOT preggo but a good friend of mine is and just went to the doc who told her that she may have placenta previa. I am trying to do some research to understand what it is but was wondering if someone here can break it down for me.. Thanks

Re: Placenta Previa?
I actually have this. Placenta Previa is when the placenta is covering the opening of the cervix. There are 3 different stages. Complete previa is when the placenta covers the opening of the cervix completely. Partial Previa only covers part of the opening and marginal previa (which I have) doesn't cover the opening, it only lies next to the edge of the opening. The risks of having this are that you can bleed and you may need to go on bed rest depending on how bad the placenta is. The placenta is supposed to attach itself higher on your uterus, but can sometimes attach lower. Most of the time the previa can resolve itself when the uterus expands. It migrates up and out of the way. In some cases it doesn't, like mine. My dr said he wants my placenta to be 2.5 cm away from the opening of the cervix to have a vaginal birth. If it doesn't move chances are c section. Plus you have to go for sonos more often to have it checked. As of now it looks like I have to have a c section but am hoping it moves in the last couple of weeks I have left (I'm 34 1/2 weeks). if you have any other questions feel free to fm me! HTH

Re: Placenta Previa?
I have a low placenta. At 16 weeks I was told it was low, and today at 20 weeks I was told it was still low but had come up some from 16w. It wasn't of enough concern for them to put me on bed rest or pelvic rest, but I'm going back again at 28 weeks for monitoring. The tech said they never get lower and in most cases move up, so chances are it will resolve by 28 weeks but they like to monitor it...

Re: Placenta Previa?
I had this in the beginning. The PP gave you a good explanation of what it is. Just wanted to let you know that it does often resolve itself. Last week (at 23 weeks) I found out my placenta is now up high. Makes me laugh how much things are moving around in there. Your friend should refrain from sex while she has the previa.

Actually not true, they diagnosed me with low placenta at 12 weeks, i started having bleeding at 15 weeks and had an ultrasound and the first he said was the placenta had moved lower. He assumed it would move up as the baby grew but as the baby grows it's moving lower.
