placement of carseat

We need to install the convertiable carseat this weekend. Where is the safest place to put it? Middle with no latch, passenger side, or driver's side? We have a volvo s60 and a roundabout.

Re: placement of carseat

Why is the passenger side safer, is it because you can see DC better. I have mine on driver side..I guess I should move it.

Middle is safest from crash point of view. Passenger is next safest if you can't use the middle, because if you park on the side of the road, you are opening the door and getting the baby in and out from the curb side, not the street side.

What would you do if you do not have the latches for the middle? Would you still put in the middle with just a seat belt, because the middle is safer, or the passenger side with the latches?

Re: placement of carseat

the latches and the seat belt are equally as safe. So the middle with the seat belt is fine.

I am not sure about this....when I called the fire department about getting my car seat installed, the woman said each car is different and it will tell you in the owner's manual the safest spot for the car seat...in my car (trailblazer) that happens to be on the passenger side. Chat Icon

this is what they taught us in the child safety seat certification course. But if that is what your manual said then go with that of course.

From a side-impact view, the middle of the car will have several feet of "crumple zone", whereas either side will only have inches. Every resource I've read says the middle is always the safest, for this reason.

When attached properly, seat belts are just as safe, if not safer than the LATCH connections. They just aren't as convenient. Nearly all carseats and cars say you must switch to the seatbelt after the child is above a certain weight.

Thanks for the info...I always thought that the middle would be safer in case you get t-boned but everyone kept saying, no it depends on the car....I would rather have her in the middle..
