Piercing ears at 1 year old?
I don't want this to turn into a debate, I've seen this topic go bad very quickly in the past. That said . . .
We're thinking about piercing DD's ears, DH thinks it would be nice to do it for her 1st birthday. Has anyone done it at this age? How did it go? I'm sure DD will cry for a few seconds as she normally does when she gets a vaccine, falls down, etc. Did anyone have any problems beyond a few brief tears? My mom made me wait until I was 11 to get mine done and I always wished she had done it when I was a baby so I didn't have to wait so long.

Re: Piercing ears at 1 year old?
We pierced dd's ears at 6 months when the ped would do it. I love them. We have never had a problem with them. She is 21 months now and just over a phase of taking them out for a few weeks, , thank goodness that is over
She cried for maybe 2 mins each ear. I think it's sound the gun makes with being held down that scares them more. She's the same with vaccines, cries for 2 mins.
The only thing is, I am glad we did it when she was young. I couldn't not imagine holding my dd down now. She was/is a VERY active toddler. Maybe at a year I could still do it. I don't know, but you know your dd best.
I say go for it. I think girls that little are adorable. I figure she she doesn't want them when she's older we will take them out. My holes don't close and hoping her don't either.
Good Luck

Re: Piercing ears at 1 year old?
The only reason I can think of to not do it now would be that she would be more aware that there's something in her ear and may play with it. We did DD when she was 4 months so that she wouldnt know they were there and they would be able to heal without her messing with them.
As far as pain Im sure she'll cry for a minute or two but then she should be fine.

Re: Piercing ears at 1 year old?
We pierced DD's ears at 5 mths at the ped's office. She cried for a minute. At 15 mths she has gone through a few pairs of earrings....lol...even the one you screw on back she figured out a way to get them off. Now I use the screw on backs and a rubber stopper...it was a recommendation from our neighbor who is a jeweler. So far we have not lost the earrings for a mth - our personal best!

Re: Piercing ears at 1 year old?
My DD is 22 months and for the last 2 months has taken her earrings out every chance she gets. We have lost so many earrings! They are also very expensive to replace. It has been the biggest pain in the ass. I cant leave her for 1 second or she takes them out (screw on backs and saftey backs). Not all toddlers do this, but you don't know what your baby will do when she is that age, whether she will be fine with it or will spend every chance she gets trying to take them out. I pierced her ears at 10 months old and she was fine with it until she was a little older. We went to a pediatrician (not ours, they don't do ear piercing). They numbed her ears with a lidocain cream and use sterile disposible little guns preloaded with a gold earring. It was less tramatic then shot. But i have spent many other tramatic days holding her down trying to get the earring back in. If i could do it all over again, i would wait until she was 4 or 5.

This is great advice. I will try it. DD was a maniac trying to change them one time so I didn't. Now she just sits and let's me do it. I also try to do it when she's strapped down, highchair, stroller etc.

No problem. This is what I ordered. Cheap and so far quite effective!

Re: Piercing ears at 1 year old?
well, we did it at 3, and it went great. no tears. a little look of fear after the first one, but that was maybe 5 seconds? then she was so thrilled. (she had asked for them and picked out the earrings.)
i don't think it hurts that much in reality, so i dont think she would cry a lot. i think it's the fear and anticipation if you think about it too much. fear of the unknown.
