Pi$$ed off...

A neighbor of ours recently found a pitbull, and took her into his home.

His son rescued a dog from a dog-fighting sting they were on (son is a police officer), and decided to take this dog into his possession.

The neighbor (son's father) walks his dogs off their leashes, and brags about how well they can do this. He is now teaching this pitbull how to walk off a leash and he proceeds to do this daily up/down our block (a block filled with young children and owners with small dogs).

The other day, he passed a comment jokingly saying that if is dog ever jumped our fence, she'd devour our two yorkies. I was LIVID and told him that if that were to ever happen, he would be a very different man. I have ball$ (well, not literally heheheh), and I don't care that I said it to him.

Today, I let my two yorkies out to use the bathroom and I ran in to grab a drink. Out of the corner of my eye I see this man, with ALL his might, holding back this pitbull from running into our yard. I'm surprised the dog was actually on a leash this time. I'm THANKful actually because if she weren't on a leash, she would have JUMPED our fence and attacked my two yorkies. He didn't know that I saw him - he finally got a grip on the dog and started running with her down the block. I ran to the back door and yelled for my two ("girls, get in here" - it's really cute actually), and I was FUMING.

What do I do with this?

Just an FYI - I love animals. If you know me, that goes without saying. I understand that dogs are only as vicious as their owners allow them to be, and that not all dogs are bad. Pitbulls have a bad name for themselves, sure. THIS pitbull was RESCUED FROM A LIFE OF FIGHTING. She was SAVED from being hurt badly when my neighbor's son brought her home. Wonderful. My points though - 1. why the F would my neighbor brag to me that his new dog would rip mine apart?
2. why does he proceed to tell me that his dog can gracefully jump 4' fences?

I'm SO F'N pi$$ed right now.

Okay, vent over.

PS - DON'T MOVE THIS TO PETS. THIS IS A NFR ISSUE. Thank you!

I'd say your neighbor is a Jacka$$ for bragging about things like that. I think it is scary that you have to worry about letting your dogs out in YOUR backyard. He most certainly should never walk the dog without a leash. I don't really have any advice because I'm not sure what you can do about your situation. Maybe talk to the son considering he is a cop??? Good Luck. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Every time I saw him walking the dog off a leash I'd call the cops. There are leash laws for a reason. When I called I'd tell the cops that you know the dog was a rescue from dog fighting and I am concerned for the children and other residents in the area.

Re: Pi$$ed off...

i would do a combination of the two previous posts: first i would let the son (cop) know, if nothing changes, then i would call the police every time i saw the dog off the leash.

you should not have to fear for your dogs in YOUR own yard.

THANK GOD the dog was on the leash

Re: Pi$$ed off...

shouldnt the father of a COP know better than to walk the dog off leash?

wth is wrong with people??????

and the whole bragging his dog could eat yours up, well, i get that all the time too. its compensation for somehting the owner is lacking if you ask meChat Icon Chat Icon

(this one guy ALWAYS says to me at the bar "careful, Tank didnt eat lunch yet "[in regaurds to mia] and i always just say "awesome, i havent killed anything yet")

sounds like you may have a pretty bad situation on your hands.

i dont think there is much you can do yet though, sorry.

id wait to see if you ever see him walkiner her off leash and then complain to the son.

Re: Pi$$ed off...

I hate to see ANY dog off a leash. Not necessarily because I'm afraid they'll attack, but dogs can get spooked for some unknown reason and take off into the middle of the street. I only walk Bonnie off the leash when we are in this secluded open area on our property. And if I see people coming, I leash her just in case they are scared of dogs.

But like pp's said, there are leash laws!! It's a LAW! Def compain to the son, and if needed, the police. Why wait until someone or your dogs get attacked before acting?

That's terrible! I would call the son and try to be nice but if he continues to walk the dog off the leash I would call the cops.
All dogs should be leashed but especially one that has a background like that he should be extra careful. What an idiot.

Re: Pi$$ed off...

Honestly, how much can you do?
You can talk to the son and you can call the police if you see him walking the dog off-leash (which he wasn't).
But, in the long run - the man is just an azz and no matter what you say or do, he is going to continue the ridiculous behaviour.
I would bet $$$ the dog can't jump 4' fences and that just goes along with his idiocy.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Pi$$ed off...

I would be furious too. I also have 2 yorkies, they are small and helpless compared to a pit bull. Besides the fact that people use small dogs like ours to train fighting dogs. DH dealt with that alot in his old precinct, finding fighting dogs or pit bull puppies that didnt "make the cut" but he would always call the ASPCA to come get them. He always said most of them were cute and seemed well behaved, but he would never, ever trust them. Check with your town, there may be leash laws and also laws on the type of dogs you are allowed to have and how dogs have to be fenced in, etc.

Re: Pi$$ed off...

That does not sound like a good owener. We have a Rottie and she loves all dogs cause I made SURE she is socialized and in classes. Sounds like they found this dog but it still has horrible habits. Next time I would totally call if it's off the leash and tell the owner you will maybe he will think twice since he is a cop and does not want any trouble. GL sorry and hope your babies are okay
