Phone Scam??
my mother have been getting harrassing phone calls from someone who claims they are a collection agency stating that my mother owes them $155 dollars for a past due Cingular phone bill.....
We called Cingular they have no record of this and why would Cingular send a case of $155 to a collection agency?? Even if this is true, we never saw the bill!
These people call her everyday and are very rude.
I am telling her that it is a scam. What do you think??

Well if Cingular has no record of it then it is def. a scam. Next time they call I think she should tell them that she called cingular and does not owe them any money and she is contracting the police if they call back again.

she did, and the "collection" people said that Cingular has no record of it because once they pass it off to the collection agency, they delete the records.....

The same thing was happening to my MIL...but they were looking for my SIL who no longer even lives there...no longer within this state...
They called everyday..and refused to discuss anything with MIL... and SIL knew nothing about it, for she had gotten rid of cingular a yr. prior to these calls..
Eventually MIL said she dosent live here anymore..and the calls slowly stopped...but SIL never got a bill..and never heard from them..
So I wanna say its a scam! but I dont know for sure

yea right...
even if it's sent off to collections, Cingular would still have a record of the acct. I used to be a Mgr. of Credit & Collections, and whenever we sent anyone off to collections, the acct was always assigned a particular code that meant "charged off as bad debt"...or sent to collections.

this whole thing is just very bazzar, they have her old cell phone number and her name.. I mean in these day and age, anybody who can surf the internet can find out things like that...
I told her that I am pretty sure it's a scam.. imagine if they harrass 100 people and 10 people falls for it thinking "fine, I'll pay it, so you can stop harrassing me.." that's $1550!

Tell her that she disputes the debt and that by law they have to send something to her in writing so that she can dispute it.
IF they send her something - she can just write that she disputes the debt within 30 days of getting the letter - if it is a scam that should get them to leave her alone. OR she could tell them to send her something and she will give it to her atty and if they continue to call she will report it to the police.

My mom asked them to mail the bill they said there are NO BILL, just the contract, so she asked for a copy of the contract, so they asked my mom for her current cell phone number, she was like "do you think I am stupid? You are already harrassing me via my home phone and you think I would give you my cell phone #?" 
... so they claim they are sending the contract, we'll see......

I had an issue with a hospital bill last year -
They HAVE to send you a letter detailing the amount of the debt and your RIGHT to dispute this debt and how long you have to dispute it.
This site will help IF they are legit
