Pet Insurance
We recently got a dog a few months ago and I know nothing about animals in general. Never owned one. We have a 6 month old Shih Tzu and she just came into heat. Which means we have to get her neutered. How much is this procedure and does insurance cover this?

Pet Insurance
You can call your vet and ask for a spay/neuter price over the phone -- they should be able to provide it. Make sure you get the entire price, which includes the procedure itself, the anesthesia, the stitches, stitch removal if necessary, medicines afterwards, etc. As for pet insurance, most won't cover the procedure. Pet insurance usually works that you pay a monthly amount which will based on the deductible amount you choose. We use Trupanion and pay around $45 a month and have a $350 deductible. If there's a medical emergency, we pay $350 and anything beyond that, Trupanion pays 90% and we pay the remaining 10%. The cost of your policy is based on the age of your dog, the breed, and if they have any pre-existing conditions. Our dog is a large breed and while we've only had to use the policy twice in the last 3 years, it really saved us a lot of money. To give you an example, our dog was attacked at a dog park by another dog....badly. Skin on his head was ripped down to the skull. Needed 3 nights overnight at the vet for monitoring, medicine intravenously while at the vet, medicine via pills when he came home, stitches, etc. The total bill was close to $2400. We paid around $600 out of pocket and Trupanion picked up the rest. Because he's a large breed, he might have issues with hip dysplasia as he gets older or have ACL issues, all common with his breed. Like all insurance, its a pain to pay for it, but you'll be thankful if/when you need to use it.

Re: Pet Insurance
^^^^^^ Thats so horrible. I'm so sorry about your dog..........What a disaster! I don't bring mine to dog parks; because unfortunately; my dog isnt a fan of dogs really yet. But I hear such horror stories. I hope he is OK and fully recovered! Poor baby!
As for the OP; when I neutered mine in December; I actually called 6 places. Got quotes from $200 to $600+. Call around........it seems each vet charges differently.
And I also am a big fan of pet insurance. I have used it twice so far. Some may think its a waste of money; but My dog is also a Large Breed, and it helps having a piece of mind. You really never know when you will need it. Vet bills are not cheap.

I used to have Trupanion for my Chih. I ended up cancelling it because I really needed it to cover the cost of his dental bills, but because dental problems are a common breed issue they dont cover dental. It just wasn't cost effective for us. Just be careful with what plan you pick and read the overages carefully.
As far as the spay/neuter, I got my dog already fixed but I do know an AMAZING vet that travels and works out of her home so he prices are extremely reasonable if you're interested.

Thank you so much for your concern. He recovered beautifully (has a huge scar on his head though) but needless to say we no longer go to public dog parks. Its a risk that I'm just not willing to take given how many irresponsible dog owners there are and how many of the dogs at these places are non-dog friendly. The a$$hole owner of the dog that attacked mine ran out of the park with his dog while we were tending to my guy -- trying to stop the bleeding and basically keep the skin on his head together. Ugh! Thinking of it today still gives me chills.

We also had pet insurance (not trupanion) - and everything was always considering 'not included' and to get anything covered was a fight.
Something like they would only pay based on the diagnosis. My cat's diagnosis was 'infected anal glands' but they refused to cover it because 'infected anal glands' according to them is a TEST and not a diagnosis.
I gave up after trying to fight that for 3 days and just didn't renew.

What a fknnn prickkkkk ba&tard POS! I was actually going to ask you if he reimbursed you in any way. This makes me so angry that there are so many people out there like this. Thankfully, he is OK. He will just have to get extra hugs and kisses....
