If you have an employer LTD plan most from what Ive seen will require you to apply for both as payment from SSDI will offset what you get from LTD carrier.
How long it takes for LTD-depends on if you are approved the first time around or denied and have to appeal. SSDI can take years and multiple tries. There's not a set amount of time. Its based on the type of disability and how detailed your doctors have kept your medical history. So make sure your medical records are up to date. Have them write letters as to why your disability does indeed make you unfit for work--even sedentary work. Make sure you also have tests etc to back up the physical limitations.

Thanks for the info! Can you still work during the application?

Perm Disability Q
I spoke to a lawyer about this recently. Some advice is to create an account on the social security website so you can answer some basic questions like when was your last insured date (this date will be a future date to ensure you're eligible for ssdi benefits), how many credits you earned each quarter, and your earnings year by year. I did this and called 2 lawyers for more info and advice. The one in the city gave me so much info and a projection. he explained that since I'm under 50, I will probably be denied the first time. For me and my condition, 3-5 years. Payments are retroactive to your initial filing date. PM me if you want more information.
