People with ponds
are you afraid your dog will jump/fall in?
We have pond in our backyard. Not sure exactly how deep it is, but it's definately a few feet on one side. We're training Iggy to go to the bathroom outside. I am so scared that he will fall in and drown Especially after someone posted on here that their sister's dog died this way. And what's even worse is that he likes to run back and forth over the little bridge over the pond. I don't let him out to play much because of this. It ***** that we have all this backyard and he can't really enjoy it I'm terrified.

we do have a pond, and Tiger used to drink from it, but now that my boys are walking we put up a fence, so he cant get to it anymore.

Re: People with ponds
My mother has a pond and two dogs. The pond is level with the ground so it would be very easy for the dogs to fall in and they never have. She's had the pond for over four years with no incidents of falling in. Her Papillion is crazy too - so we really expected him to fall in sooner or later, never happened.

What kind of fence did you guys put up? I thought about that, but I wasn't sure how it would look.

I have a silly question......do you have to teach a dog how to swim?

wow really, that's great. so if he falls in, he wouldn't drown?
Hopefully I won't have to test that out until summer when we open our pool.

Definitely wouldn't drown...it's instinctive with dogs and cats...they just know how to swim. The hardest part is getting them out of the water if there isn't an incline or steps because they can't haul themselves out of the water.

Be careful letting your dog in the pool, you don't want him to rip your liner!!

it wasnt actually around the pond itself.. its almost like some of the yard is divided with a fence... so the dogs have one half... it actuallylooks nice... its a stockade fence so you can see through it and its not completely dividing it up...
i hope this makes sense to you.

Re: People with ponds
I'm pretty sure someone on this website made a post some time back re: her sister's one year old dog that fell into their pond and died (the post was from December, so falling into very cold water will cause hypothermia/shock and the instantaneous shock causes people/animals to gasp, and it usually is water they gasp, resulting in drowning). You can never be too careful.
