People that need to place blame when a kid gets hurt?

I am wondering how you handle people who think they need to place blame on someone when a kid gets hurt.

Anytime one of my kids gets hurt, the inevitable, "Why weren't you watching him/her?" comes from my in-laws, its as if accidents don't exist in their world

So I guess my question is, why do people react that way, and what do you say if that happens to you?

That's insulting to say the least. But if someone was foolish enough to say that to me I'd tell them I was busy drinking or shooting up. Really?! Accidents happen all the time, we feel bad enough their hurt, we don't need the added guilt.

my son gets hurt right in front of me half the time. literally trips over his own feet. Today in Michaels he flopped and his knee hit the shelf. He was right in between me and DH.

tell your inlaws to go scratch...

they must have selective memory..that their kids never got hurt on their watch?

I get that from both my parents and ils!! I dont have eyes on the back of my head and i cant be in every room or following them around. They make it seem like im the one that hurt them. Its tough but i know they say it cause they love their grandkids. For example today DD scratched DS face and i got "where were you??". Actually i was sitting right next to them but they were playing and sh!t happens!

I nipped this quick with my aunt. My MIL totally got it from day one.. kids will be kids.. She had 3 of her own. My father is the utter opposite and nearly invites injury.

But my aunt put blame.. so the first time she even raised an eyebrow I said...

"Whatever. No child has ever gone through childhood without losing a pint of blood somewhere along the way. The goal is to spread it out though and I think she's doing a good job"

She got pissy about it once and the words nearly came out 'where were you' and I said, I was standing right next to her when she decided that her face was best suited flat on the floor, where were YOU when you nearly dropped that TV on to her? Since that TV incident she's never said a word to me. Plus the time she knocked AJ off a porch face first about 2 and a half feet down. But yes.. in the beginning she would give me the stink eye.. then she quickly learned I watch/see my daughter ALL the time... in an amazing way only mothers know how to do.. nothing goes without notice, but as an infant, she was NEVER out of my constant reach. As a bigger toddler she's given a lot longer 'leash' if you will to go get injured and LEARN running full force backwards not looking WILL hurt !! LOL


ETA: plus I like to point out her OWN childhood was a lot less padded and pretty than my daughter's.. and SHE survived it! to which she says "thats true.." and goes off on how hard things were back then blah blah blah

That is so anoying! Uh, maybe I was using the toilet for 30 seconds? LOL

I find it so irritating when people ask me how they got a bruise/scratch. I'm like... because they scratched their face with their toy or nail/ play hard outside or possibly because THAT one there (point to whatever twin doesn't have the bruise) beaned that one with a toy/pushed her/ fought over a riding toy etc.) My girls are very physically. They are climbing maniacs. They get bruises on their shins all the time.

I figure if they don't have a bruise or two, then they haven't played hard enough LOL
