Pension for Superintendent
Over $500,000 PENSION????? I am sorry but how can he justify that he deserves that. No wonder taxes are so high.
LINK
ETA - oh wait, I read it wrong. He gets over 300,000 from retiring from Commack, and gets a salary of 200K for now working in Malverne. Give me a break.

Re: Pension for Superintendent
This is the problem I have with my school taxes. The teachers deserve their salaries...they work their a$$es off. But the superintendants, deputy whatever, jr deputy whatever, blah blah blah (and the other 50 titles they make up) dont need to be making $200k plus

Re: Pension for Superintendent
Now, I don't know the guy from Commack, but I can tell you about one of the others as he is a family member.
You work for 40 years, go to school to become an administrator (even get your doctorate) and then move up to becoming Superintendent. You do very well and have the respect of the teacher, school board, community and even the teacher's union. You retire...
A year after you retire, a nearby district calls and says they are in a tough spot - the school year will begin and they have no superintendent. It is too late in the summer and anyone who is halfway decent has already found a job. Can you possibly fill in for the interim? They offer you a salary. Now, you are in the ideal position for negotiating a salary but you are already collecting a pension on the years you have already put in, so rather than take advantage, you accept just what they offer you (since, who would work extra without being paid 0 not me!). You work for the year while they are interviewing others. No luck and you stay on just for the second year.
Then Newsday calls (RIGHT BEFORE SCHOOL BUDGET VOTES...how convenient...).
Not all of these people are bad people.

Re: Pension for Superintendent
Newsday is extremely anti-teacher/school district and with the budget vote coming up very soon they will be publishing every possible negative article they can create.
Educate yourself on your own district and make a decision for yourself, not what Newsday tells you.

This is so true and typical. In the next couple of weeks you are probaby going to see MANY articles discussing teachers and school salaries.
As for the superintendents, most of them are tier 1. Tier 1 people were given a lot because most came in during the teacher's shortage when teachers were making about 7k A YEAR. They were given other perks to make up the difference, like larger pensions without contributions and stuff.
As for the superintendents themselves, the district I teach in is on it's '4th' superintendent since I have been there (12 years). The one that was there when I first start was ok, most teachers didn't LOVE him but they didn't despise him completely. The next one that came in (happens to be in the article) was an azz. He knew very little about the area and mentality of the area, but the one thing that won the respect of the teachers unlike the previous one, was he put more into academics and academics courses than the sports and the fields unlike the last one. Then came the last one. She was horrid!!! She was fired and we are still paying for her. Right now we have an Intrem, he is 'homegrown' teacher that rose through the ranks. He has always been able to do the careful balancing act of keeping everyone even when people don't agree with him. He is a real person not someone who walks around with ares.
I think their job is VERY challenging. They must do the perfect balancing act of keeping the public happy, giving the teachers what they need to do their jobs, dealing with the bs coming out of Albany and keeping the school board happy. Ultimately if taxes are raised too much and scores decline too much it's the superintendent's job that is on the line. If too many things have to be cut to keep taxes down, then teachers and parents are not happy and blame each other (taxes and salary). IMO it truly is a difficult balancing act.
The education level that most must achieve is also not easy and should be compensated.
If this job was so easy, then there would be more superintendents. But I can tell you there is a shortage because most administrators do not to aspire to this level because of the stress. Our last 2 came from out of state.
Just something to think about.
ETA because I can't spell tonight

Newsday is extremely biased - I DEF agree with that! I would take anything that comes out of that paper with a grain of salt.
