peditrican interview question
I haven't started yet, but from what I remember with my sister some things that would be important to me are : 1) the staff - is the support staff helpful, nice, nasty, rude, do they take a long time to answer the phones, do they really work to get you an appointment asap? 2) On call - what is their on call process for after hours? Do you page the doctor themselves, are they part of an "on call pool" where you could be getting another doctor? 3) What is their emergency policy? Baby/child is sick, how soon can they get you in? Will they let you come in same day? 4) Doctor's bedside manner - not a necessity, but I think it's nice when the doctor has good bedside manner.
I'm sure that the BTDT moms can give many many more ideas.

peditrican interview question
I never interviewed pediatricians. I asked for recommendations and chose a practice that was highly recommended.
ETA: 3 months and several visits later, I'm happy with my choice.

Not to sound dopey but do you just call the pediatrician and say you are having a baby. We plan on using the same pediatrician as my nieces

We did the same thing as Eliza.
Yes, we just called up and said we wanted to join their practice. They did not take my info and just told me to call back after he was born.

Doctors are only affiliated with specific hospitals, from what has happened for most of my friends, the hospitalist pediatrician saw the baby initially and then within a day or two of being released they brought the baby to THEIR pediatrician's office.

They are affiliated with where I am delivering, sorry I should have stated that!

Re: peditrican interview question
Then yes, I would call when still in the hospital... I'm sure every doctor has a different protocol. I would probably call regardless when I am still in the hospital so that they can make time to see the baby when we get released... But I can be pretty forceful with doctors offices.

Re: peditrican interview question
I never interviewed peds. I asked around for a good one that was affiliated with the hospital I was delivering at. Then I called them and said I'd be having a baby around such and such time at that hospital and did I need to do anything. They said that once the baby was born the hospital would call them. When I was in labor they asked if I had a ped and I gave his name. He came to see her the next day on his rounds.

The hospital should let them know . When I signed in at L&D to give birth they asked if I had a ped. I gave his name. That was it. He showed up the next day while on rounds to see her. If the ped is affliated with the hospital they should handle it for you. No need to worry about calling on your own the day of giving birth. Good lord I could barely think that day!

peditrican interview question
We met with our pediatrician ahead of time. They are affiliated with our hospital. They said the hospital will call them, unless the baby is in the Nicu.

We never even called them. When I was admitted to the hospital, they asked who we were using and they contacted them for me. I knew ahead of time that they were affiliated with the hospital. One of the doctors came in on the day we were discharged to check her out and told me to call and schedule an appointment for later that week.

I am moving out to Suffolk Co before I have the baby but will be delivering at Winthrop. Should I find a peditrican at Winthrop or closer to home? I want one closer to home but I am sure they aren't affiliated with Winthrop...any advice?

I never interviewed a ped. You will not really know if you like them until they actually start treating your child.

The hospital will have one of their peds check out the baby. It's not a big deal.

peditrican interview question
The ped I wanted to check out actually had a day where parents could come in and "meet the doctors" -- they do a presentation and then you can ask questions. When i was in the hospital they asked if I had a ped. I gave them the name, they called them, and the next day the doc came to see the baby.

No, you don't have to call the peds when you're in the hospital. Your pre-admission paperwork will ask what pediatrician you want to use/who should see the baby. You just write your choice in there. When the baby is born, the pediatrician you choose will see your baby during rounds. When you're discharged, the hospital will send the records to the peds you chose.
If you call the peds ahead of time to say we choose you, there isn't really anything they will do.

Same here. I just called to make sure they take our insurance and see if they were affiliated with the hospital we were delivering at. Even if they aren't, you can just use the on call doctors and then call them once you're home to schedule the first appointment.

peditrican interview question
I met with my DD's pediatrician before she was born. I did some research online then called the office and set up an appointment to meet with the doctor. The office has specific time slots at the end of the day for parents to meet with the doctor- the appointment was free and gave us a chance to talk with the doctor We knew in the first few minutes we found the doctor we were going to use. The doctor took charge of the meeting and gave us a bit of an overview then we just talked.

I never interviewed peds either. I got a few diff recommendations from friends. One of the most important things for me was their hours. My ped has evening hours and is open sat/sun too, which for me has been a lifesaver.
