Peanut Allergy

I just read in one of my magazines that if you eat a lot of peanuts in your third trimester your child may be more prone to the peanut allergy?? Anyone else hear about this?

I love peanut butter! I eat it all the time Chat Icon

Re: Peanut Allergy

I heard that too, but I think it's more genetic than anything. I've been eating all natural peanut butter in moderation.

Re: Peanut Allergy

I read that somewhere too but again... I kind of feel like you should eat some here and there so the baby can be exposed to peanuts a little and maybe that will prevent it. I'm not a doctor but it makes more sense to me than not eating it.

Re: Peanut Allergy

I think it's only a cause for concern if they run in your family. My first DC has food allergies so my allergist told me to avoid eating any peanuts in my last tri which I'm doing, but otherwise it's usually not an issue.

But they do say foods are either thought to, or have been proven to pass through into the fetus in the last trimester.

oooh OK. I did not read anything that specified a trimester, but that makes sense then.

My doctor told me this and I told DH, thinking that I would just ignore it. He pointed out that it would be really hard to have a child with a peanut allergy when we eat so many products.

We don't have peanut allergies in our families either. But I am not eating it anymore. Its only 5 more weeks.

I actually asked my doctor about peanut butter this morning because I love Nutter Butter Cookies and wanted to make sure it was ok to eat them now - she said it's fine and not to worry about it!

I ate a lot of peanut butter when I was PG. My OB said it is really for people that have allergies in their family and not to worry.

He also said that even if you do eat it and have allergies in the family, it is all genetics.

Re: Peanut Allergy

I read this too, and I also read it doesn't need to be a family history thing. I know a lot of people that have kids with a PB allergy but don't have a family history. I don't eat PB really other than an occassional Reeses PB cup. I personally am not chancing it because I know that dealing with PB allergies is a HUGE issue for many families.

I think it's the opposite with peanuts - the first exposure may not be bad, but they get progressively worse.

I gave it up - it's only 3 months vs a possible lifetime of what ifs.

yep, it's actually the opposite. Each exposure makes the allergy worse and worse, so being exposed to it here and there won't prevent the allergy from occuring.

No one even really knows the exact cause of allergies because there's no one reason. It may be a combo of family history, although certainly not always the case, or just a random thing that happened to you and your child.

Re: Peanut Allergy

My mom didn't eat PB at all during her PG's, she was too sick to eat anything but ices and milkshakes-she was put in the hospital with both pg's with bad m/s.

With me-EVEN the tiniest bit of oil from a PINE NUT can throw me into a very bad reaction. Pine nuts can kill me!

I got my 1 nut allergy from my dad who can eat pine nuts, but not hazelnuts and he gets in no way the reaction i can get from pine nuts.

I can eat globs of PB and hazelnuts and not get a thing. My brother has NO NUT allergies. So what's that mean? I think it's genetic.
I am not allergic to anything else.

I love PB and i ate it with my DD and will and have with this pg. Basically, do what you think is best for you and your baby.

All I can say on the matter is this:

If overexposure prior to birth caused allergies, my daughter would be deathly allergic to tomatoes. She has been tested and doesn't have a single allergy of any sort!
