Partial Separation Class ?

For those of you who have taken your child to a partial separation class:
How did the teacher transition from the part of the class where parents are present to the separation part of the class? My son is in a class now and all of the kids are upset when the parents leave. The don't set them up with an activity or anything to keep them occupied while we leave the room - just wondering if this is typical...TIA for your responses!

We did preschool prep with DS#1 at Moon Soup. They have classes that are similar with different lengths of separation. It was a nice mix of art, open play, science, music and dance. I really loved the curriculum.

You start with a 60 minute preschool prep class that has no separation. The you move on to a 60 minute class that has a little 10 minutes of separation at the end. The next class is 90 minutes with about 60 minutes parent participation and 30 minutes of separation. Finally, you are ready for Little School, which is 90 minutes of full separation.

The school had small window where parents could watch and the kids could see the parents. I think it made the kids feel more comfortable.
