Parents with an IEP

If your LO has an IEP and you feel they are not following it what would you do?

DS was in the special needs preschool classes when IE ended.
After testing he was put into mainstream kindergarten with a special needs teacher in the class for just a few kids who need it.
He gets speech twice a week, OT once a week and the special needs teach (according to his IEP) that is supposed to be sitting with him and a few other kids for math and reading. He is doing well, but after speaking with the other mom as well as our boys we get the idea that they don't get the attention they need. It seems more like they co teach and the special needs teacher walks around to help everyone if the IEP kids are doing well.
While I do think DS is doing well, I still believe he should be getting more time with the special needs teacher. He is really good with math, but really needs help with writing. He's coming home with writing work that looks a mess and was obviously never corrected.
The other mom I'm friendly with feels the same way. Her son is having more trouble than mine and we feel she never sits with them. She brought it up to the case manager and said she'll get a call back from the special needs teacher. It's been a few days since. We still get told she is there to help all the kids as well. I am ok with that, but also the main reason she is there in the class is for the 3 boys that have an IEP.
Is there anything else we can do? We are in NJ so not sure if the rules are different.
Thanks

I'm a special education teacher.

What is this mainstreamed class called? ICT? CTT? Is the special education teacher in there full time? What specifically does the IEP with regards to English/Math?

It's regular kindergarten, but according to his iep he'd have a special needs teacher in there for him for 45 mins math and 44 mins reading. I should add its also half day kindergarten. There are 20 kids in the class. Three are iep so that's why they have the special needs teacher in there in addition to the regular kindergarten teacher.
From what I've gorten she walks around the class and helps everyone. Just the 3 kids got their iep on how they're doing from her and it was pretty generic. Didn't go into details like the way he had when he was in the self contained class.
I love his speech teacher and I grt a lot of feedback from her. Especially bc she sees him by himself or with one other kid. OT is on his own as well.

Parents with an IEP

It sounds like a regular inclusion class. the point of the inclusion class is that you should be able to walk in and not know who the general ed teacher is and who the special ed teacher is.

With that being said, all students needs should be met, especially the needs of students with an IEP. What exactly are his modifications and accommodations as listed on the IEP?

If you are not happy with your childs education I would call the teacher and or the case manager and if need be have a team meeting to address your concerns.

Thanks. Maybe it was just never really explained how it works till after the fact. In his iep meeting it seemed like he would work more closely with the special Ed teacher in the class. He is doing well but could use more attention with writing. Like I said, he comes home with sentences that are illegible and never looked at or corrected. I also have him at a kindergarten enrichment class twice a week and since its a small class he gets a lot of attention. I guess I'm also used to the small class and close attention. He went from being in a class of 8 with a special Ed teacher, speech and assistant everyday.

I would ask for an OT evaluation if he is having handwriting issues. IME with my child with special needs, handwriting help has always come from the OT. Oh, N/M, I see he already gets OT.

It may also be a consultant teacher direct, which is when a se teacher pushes in to a gen ed classroom and works with a very small group of kids. This is the least restrictive setting. If you think Your child needs more, you may need to advocate for resource room, where he would be pulled out to work on the skills.

I agree.

I coteach at a high school and with our setup it's hard to tell who the content teacher is. We both help all students regardless of if they have an iep or not.

If you are unhappy with the attention your DS is getting, I'd contact the teachers.

This is exactly the type of class my child was in for 4th and 5th grade. He was also pulled out for Resource Room.
