I need someone else's opinion on this before i go crazy.
My MIL has been pushing this on DH and I (he's Jewish, i'm not) This organization (ParentBound.com) sponsors people to go to Israel to have IVF treatments done at a lower cost since its subsidized by the gov't. She keeps sending me emails telling me how the Israeli gov't wants jews to have more babies and how they're in the forefront of infertility treatments etc and we should really look into this ivf 'journey'
I tried telling her how impractical it would be for us to go half way around the world to have a procedure done but she keeps bringing it up every time we see her.
Can any ladies who've gone through IVF give me your thoughts on this? I'm correct in my thinking that it would be completely impractical right?

Re: ParentBound
It would not be for me, but I am a bad traveler. The IVF process can take over a month or so depending on your protocol - would you be willing to stay there for that long?

Re: ParentBound
Well...many folks go overseas to have IVF because it is cheaper. Maybe your Mom is onto something? At a cost upwards of 10,000- sometimes 20,000 per cycle...it may actually be cost effective. You may even get some frosties and if your cycle in Israel is not successful, you can go back and do a cheap FET.
I would add up the actual costs of the treatment in Israel as well as your travel and acommodation expenses and see if Mom may have come up with a great idea.
Just wanted to add that you can look into whether you can do your initial monitoring and meds over here and then head to Israel in time for retrieval. This way you would not have to spend that long away from home.

Re: ParentBound
After my IVF the one place I wanted to be was home and in my bed...I also developed mild OHSS which was awful afterwards and I cant even imagine not being in the comforts of my own home with it. After going thru what I went thru I would pay the extra money to stay close to home to have it done...Also its better to have your Drs close to home if you need to go in for monitoring etc
How much of a diff is it when you cost in travel, air etc?

Re: ParentBound
its def impractical... BUT if IVF was the only realistic option and i had no insurance coverage in the US, i would at least consider it. i too spent a good deal of time home in bed after ER from OHSS and I chose to stay home in bed after ET. i got OHSS again after my BFP and again had to spend time in bed. that being said i would never in a million years jump on a plane home right after. i would at least wait til a few days after transfer to fly home since its a long flight. but OHSS can pop up at any point right after so i would just make sure you have the time you need to recover before having to make the trip home.

No.. that's why i think its totally impractical. I think my MIL just thinks this is some drug you take, go to the dr's and boom you're done. i've tried telling her that it is a lot more involved than that, and we cannot take a month off of work to go to another country to do a procedure that they can do here just as well. the cost is listed as being $5k - $6k without airfare or accommodations so i fail to see how it would even be more cost effective either.
I appreciate her trying to help us out with this.. but this is not a very practical solution IMO

Re: ParentBound
I guess as someone that has investigated doing donor eggs overseas, I don't see this as being all that impractical depending upon how much you can get IVF for here. I know that it costs almost $14,000 at my center out of pocket not including meds which can run 5,000- $7,000 or more easily depending upon yoru protocol. I also know that the fee of $5,000 is pretty inexpensive for a cycle overseas.
The only other thing I would say...and this is a LONG shot...if it includes meds...it is a VERY good deal. Admittedly...most of the overseas price quotes do not include meds.
All of that being said...cycling overseas is not for everyone.
