Pregnant women were advised today to avoid taking common over-the-counter pain relievers if possible after new Danish research showed they may be linked to an increased risk of miscarriage.
In a report in The British Medical Journal, doctors at the Odder Hospital in Denmark found that women who took medicines known as non-steroidal anti- inflammatory drugs (NSAID), which include ibuprofen,
had more miscarriages than those who didn't.
But the researchers stressed the drugs did not cause any fetal abnormalities and that they did not know if the medications or other factors were the cause of the miscarriages.
"We were asked to look at the use of NSAID in cases ending in miscarriage and there we found a positive association. However, we do not know if it was the NSAID that caused it," Gunnar Lauge Nielson, an internist at the Odder Hospital, said in a telephone interview.
He said it was impossible to determine from their research whether the miscarriage resulted from NSAID or if it occurred before the drug was taken.
Avoid Unless Necessary
"The advice that I would give to doctors and patients would be that everybody should realize there may be side effects from all treatments, including drugs.
Therefore, use the drugs when they are needed but do not use or misuse them if the indication, the reason for the painkillers, is dubious," Nielsen added.
The British Medical Association (BMA) described the research as an "important study" and stressed that Nielsen and his colleagues had only shown NSAID were associated with miscarriage, not that they caused it.
"However, because of this finding, it would be better if for the moment women who knew they were pregnant avoided these drugs, particularly as there are effective alternatives such as paracetemol," the BMA said in a statement.
NSAID is a class of drugs used to relieve pain caused by headaches and arthritis. Nielsen stressed that aspirin and paracetemol were not classed as NSAID in the study.
NSAID are taken by millions. Although they are
effective for a variety of complaints, they also have potentially serious side effects, such as ulcers and stomach bleeding.
Nielson and his colleagues said little was known
about the effects of the NSAID during pregnancy. They found no similar studies in medical literature.
The doctors studied data on 1,462 women who had used the drugs during pregnancy and more than 17,000 pregnant women who had not been
prescribed any drugs.
"We found no significant association between take up of prescriptions for non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs during pregnancy and risk of congenital abnormality, low birth weight or pre-term birth," Nielsen said in the study.
"There was, however, a significant association with miscarriage."
Nielsen said the data used in the study did not
indicate when the miscarriages occurred during the pregnancy.

I waited to take tylenol for my headache waiting for that story, wondering "omg are they adding tylenole to the list??" because I already thought it was common knowledge that all pain relievers except tylenol aren't considered safe??
Needless to say, I was very frustrated to hear them say what my doctors have already told me since day 1...I think it made my headache worse!!! lol
Thank you for posting though, because for women that do not know this yet, this report is very important!!!!

Tylenol is the only painkiller im allowed to take and it cant even be extra strength. Sux bc i. Was used to just taking advil oraleve for back pain and now i just have to deal with pain. Totally worth it in the long run but oh my aching back!
