packing

we're closing right after labor day.
i started packing some stuff this morning, I have 2 boxes done and i'm already overwhelmed. I think my problem is we have a small apartment with way to much stuff in it and I don't know where to put the boxes. any ideas on how to pack to not overwhelm myself?

Re: packing

I know it's wasteful, but honestly, I will just throw out a lot of stuff.

Although you do have enough time to donate at this point, too.

Anything else that you don't feel you will immediately need, should be packed away.

Also if you devote a little time each day, or every few days, to packing, it won't be as overwhelming when it really is time to move.

Good luck!

I hate packing and moving, but it's always exciting to start over somewhere fresh and new again!

honestly, I wouldnt pack yet. A small apt can be packed in a few days. I usually start no more than 2 weeks ahead of time,

Re: packing

I started early too and had way too much stuff in my Apt, I actually couldn't believe I fit all that stuff in there. I threw out junk that I didn't want in the new house, like clothes, hand me downs, old dishes etc...we had a 2 bdrm and used the 2nd room to store the boxes.

Re: packing

When we were moving out of our apartment, I started packing two weeks before the move. We had tons of boxes stacked in our living room next to the tv. DH wasn't too thrilled with it but we were living in a two room apartment. I did though bring over some boxes to the house before our official move.

Don't pack so early or it will drive you nuts all the boxes stacked. What I was doing at the point you're at was de-cluttering and throwing out a LOT of stuff. I told DH that I did not want to move to our new house with a bunch of garbage we did not need. Sometimes you don't know how much stuff you pack away in a small space until you have to pack it all to bring it to a bigger place! I did not start to really pack until about a week or so before we were going to move. I made sure to pack all the things we didn't need first like winter clothes, extra bed sheets, towels, cds & dvds, non-perishable food, etc

Re: packing

I agree with going thru stuff and getting rid of things you don't need/don't use.

I (as you know) started packing up some things also - but we have some extra space in DS' room to store the boxes. I am going to spend the rest of my time (before we have a firm closing and moving date) going thru stuff and getting rid of things.

This will help quicken the actual packing process.

I think being that you're limited on space, that's the best route.

And trust me, before you know it - you'll be there!!!

I'm in shock b/c we're 2wks & 2 days from our "On/About date"!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: packing

Thanks for the tips. I'm just going to do it a little at a time. I find it easier to pack as I go through things. We also have to go through stuff at my parents house, in laws and our garage here. Just seems like we have stuff everywhere.

I can't believe your only 2 weeks 2 days out Jill that's nuts!!

I hope things run smoothly for you. Just as an FYI - our on/about date when we signed our contract was May 30th and we didn't close until July 3rd. Had I started packing based on that on/about date I would have been screwed. Chat Icon

Re: packing

We have an on or Before date in our contract. The current owners are relocating and only wanted to stay till the beginning of Sept because she's retiring. They already closed on their new home in FL and want to be there ASAP. good thing for us!

Re: packing

we packed boxes and bins and stacked them up along the back wall of the kitchen and we wound up eating in front of the tv on the coffee table... made it a little easier- we were still able to walk around the apartment, etc

good luck

our stuff has been in storage for over a year- and the stuff i had kept at my parents house i wound up putting in storage too (bridal shower stuff, fancy platters, etc). i cant wait to be reunited with the crap i will probably wish id thrown out LOL

Re: packing

I agree with start throwing things out now, and when you do start to pack (maybe in two weeks or so) put the boxes along the edges of the walls. You can also do stuff, like, say for fancy or holiday dishes you won't be usuing, you can wrap them in newspaper buble wrap, but put them back on the shelf. Then you can just pack the whole stack later.

You can also put out of season clothes in your suticases, and put them back where they were.
