Overnight Potty Training

Hi all,

Trying to potty training my LO. He does well all day, but overnights are a different story.

I've been putting down a sheet protector at night, but haven't been using diapers. My LO hasn't slept well in almost 2 weeks. He wakes up every night soaking wet. YUK!

Should we continue without diapers or use "nighttime underwear" and put him in a pull-up?

FYI- He is 3.5 yr old. He's been without a diaper for 2 weeks and he's only been dry 1 night so far. Has no accidents during the day.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My youngest is just 2 but she's been potty training the past 2 months and is finally down to about one accident a week. She naps in underwear and does fine but I put her in a pull up overnight. Once in a while it was dry in the morning but not usually. Suddenly the past 4 or 5 morning in a row she's woken up dry. I'm going to continue the pull up for another week or two and if she stays consistent I'll stop.

I think I would probably put him in a pull up and let him grow out of it on his own. My oldest was dry overnight before she potty trained but I know at least one of her friends is just outgrowing needing a pull up now at 4.5. She finally wakes up to go potty but still can't make it through the whole night. My 4.5yo goes all night and I have to push her into the bathroom before we leave the house or she wouldn't pee until noon!

Re: Overnight Potty Training

Many children aren't capable of holding it in overnight until they're a bit older. I'd use pull ups at night until DC shows signs of readiness (either waking up dry for several nights in a row or waking up consistently to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night).

DS1 was night trained within a month of being day trained, but DS2 took longer and had accidents every few weeks for a while. He's 4 and still wakes up more often than not in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. I know other kids who didn't night train until some time between 5 and 7.

DS didn't train at night until almost 6, DD did it herself at 3.
Both were day trained at or before 2 years old (so both wore diapers at night).
I used wetstop (an alarm that sounds when wet) with DS, but I'd save that til older. It works really well.
He never showed readiness, but I was done & thought he was old enough. He was fully trained in less than a week & has never had an accident. I told my pediatrician and she wrote down the name of the device. It was pretty cool.

I'd probably put him in a pull up overnight. My ds has been trained for about 6 months now but still wears a pull up at night... by now he rarely has an accident but it's happened a couple of nights in a row when he was sick and I'm so glad he had the pull up on instead of underwear.

Overnight Potty Training

My ds has been trained since the day he turned two. He is niw about to. E 3 and no where near ready to not wear a diaper overnight. He still wakes up with a wet diaper wvery single morning even though he is perfect throught the day. I believe he is not yet physically ready to control it while sleeping and I am not dealing with wet sheets and a wet kid every day

My dd was potty trained at 2 years and like 3mos, but she wore a pull up to bed probably for almost another year! She just couldn't hold it and her body didn't wake up. Before 3 she was able to nap without one, and prob months later make it throughout the night.

I would keep a pull up on until he woke dry.

Re: Overnight Potty Training

My DS is newly potty trained, but he wakes every morning with a soaking diaper. We're planning on doing diapers at night until he wakes dry or pretty much dry. I don't have the energy to change sheets in the middle of the night with having an infant that still doesn't STTN. He turned 3 in October. It has had no affect on his daytime training.

my son is 6... i still put him in a pull-up at night. he's been potty trained fr like 3 years now. but its really only been the past couple months that he's been waking up with a dry pull up. he DOES NOT STOP moving during the day, LOL so he completely passes out at night. he literally was not waking himself up to go in the middle of the night.
so i say its ok to put your ds in a pull up at night still. i've read that night time is a hormone/ development thing. and it just takes a long time for their bladders to be developmentally ready to hold it overnight, or for the hormone to kick in that wakes them uo to go.
do whatever helps you and him sleep the best at night!!!

Their brains aren't developed enough. Some kids take up to age 7 and this is on the normal scale.
