Overactive thyroid issues

Has anybody ever had a general thyroid test that came out negative, but then had further testing and it came back positive? I've read in magazines that a thyroid test can come out negative, but you can actually have other thyroid issues.

Re: Overactive thyroid issues

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I have an overactive thyroid (Graves Disease) and the test is measured in a number system, not a postive/negative way. You can FM if you want. I've had Graves Disease since I was 18.

Yes, it's true - it's best to have testing done on two separate occassions. I was tested and it appeared that I initially had a clean bill of health. I later went back a few months afterwards, and discovered that I have an under-active thyroid disease. It turned out that my levels were off b/c of my menstrual cycle.

Re: Overactive thyroid issues

I have this issue for a few months now.
When I was 5wks pg my TSH was about 6.5, then a wk later I had bloodwork done twice - it was 3.6 and 4.2. Then I started synthroid and after my miscarriage after about a month of being on the medication it was down to .86! Then I went off the med and had bloodwork done a couple of weeks ago and it was 3.5.

My endo can't figure it out. He says it shouldn't flucuate like this. I would imagine that in my case it is connected to hormonal changes. I plan to continue to have bloodwork every 4 wks to be sure.

Sorry I can't offer any insight other then to say I've apparently being slightly hypothyroid, on the cusp of HYPERthyroid and in the normal range - all in the past 3 months.

Seriously? I'm sorry if it's TMI, but can you tell me where you were at menstrual-cycle-wise? I had testing done while I had AF and everything came back fine....Chat Icon

This is exactly why I am asking this. My menstrual cycle has been totally screwed up (I've had sonograms and biopsies and all was well), so other than early menopause (I'm 39 and my mom was about my age when she started), I'm wondering if it could be my thryoid. He tested it last year and he said it came back fine, but I'm still wondering if it actually could be not right.

What are the symptoms of a hyperactive thyroid?
