Out Of Pocket. How much $$$
A coworker of mine found out she's expecting and on her last visit to her Dr the bill for everything for 13 or so more visits and the day of delivery will be $3,635.00. is that a good price for someone without medical insurance? If you don't mind. What did it cost you out of pocket.

all depends on your insurance. some plans could be 0 while others could be $15000.
ETA: Read it too fast. Sorry.

Re: Out Of Pocket. How much $$$
Crazy coincidence, I was just reading this blog earlier this morning.
The Dad details what every doctor's visit and test cost. The total was a little over $10,000 for a 2008-2009 pregnancy.

I have insurance but I received my explanation of benefits from the ins company and my total hospital stay, surgery (had an unscheduled c section), and examinations by drs in the hospital was $14,000! so happy I only had to pay the hospital co pay which was $200.

Re: Out Of Pocket. How much $$$
It all depends on insurance. For my doctors' visits (from start until 6 weeks postpartum), I will only pay $15 total. For my hospital visit though, I will pay a $250 deductible and 10% of the visit up to $10,000 (so most likely my hospital bill will be $1250).

WOW!!!!!!
I remember when I went to my first Dr appt the receptionist was telling me that I had to pay at least $500 up front, right then & there before I go in for my first ultrasound. I was like "Umm, you have me mixed up with somebody else, because I am fully covered!" And she realized her mistake and luckily I did not have to pay a thing. But my goodness - that is OUTRAGEOUS!! I think what they charge is just crazy (probably because they know insuance companies will cover it). I get afraid of how much I'll get billed even WITH my insurance

That's a good deal. The hospital bill is probably going to be outrageous.

Re: Out Of Pocket. How much $$$
If I'm reading correctly -- this person DOES NOT have medical insurance?
If that is the case, then I think that is a great price for her from soup to nuts.
I think just the delivery alone can run upwards of $7K-10K up in NY, especially if you wind up with a c-section....and that's now including pre-natal care visits.
If your friend got that price for everything -- I'd say it's good.

Re: Out Of Pocket. How much $$$
I'm confused about the estimate. Is that just the doctor's portion of the bill? What will the hospital stay cost? Pain medication? What if she needs a c-section? What if the baby ends up in the NICU? I only ask because I don't see how her OB can give her the full cost until after she delivers.
And I can't believe that blog post! My dr bills my insurance $35 for each prenatal visit. I can't believe they are paying over $500!

Re: Out Of Pocket. How much $$$
Sounds like that could just be the doctors portion. Is she also factoring the cost of nursery, hospital stay, etc?
The total that was billed to my insurance company for my c-section delivery with DS in 2008 was over 30K. (Surgery, anesthesia, Anesthesiologist, IVs, meds, room & board, nursery, peds visit, etc)

Re: Out Of Pocket. How much $$$
I think that's amazing. Overhead for the doctor's office and the hospital is more than that, especially if it includes ultrasounds!

Re: Out Of Pocket. How much $$$
I know that Dr's charge insurance companys a lot more than they charge people without insurance who pay out of pocket. That is b/c insurance companies never pay Dr's what they actually bill.
I worked for a doctor who charged $150 for a new patient (no ins) and ($75) for follow-ups, but when he billed insurance companies...it was like triple those amounts, and he didn'tget paid nearly that much.
This might be why the estimate seems so cheap to those of us who read our EOBs...

Re: Out Of Pocket. How much $$$
When we had DD we had to reach our deductible first so after $3,000 OOP. We are still paying off the $3,000 for the c-section.

Re: Out Of Pocket. How much $$$
80% is covered by insurance and we are responsible for the other 20%. toour doctors office we have four payments of $263. The only reason it is so high is b/c we have a $500 deductable every year. For my dd it was $163 for four visits. Having babies is expensive!
