Our employee handbook..
So I'm going to tell work on Friday about my little bean. I just thumbed through the employee handbook and all it states is that disability pays a max of $170/week for up to 26 weeks. It also says we are allowed a leave of absence for up to 90 days under certain circumstances.
What does this mean for me? All I get is to collect $170/week for a certain number of weeks? The handbook does not refer to pregnancy at all. I am also the 1st to go out on pregnancy.
I'm not sure how I should approach it if they ask me if I am returning to work (I don't plan to.) I want to have the right answers!
Any thoughts? THANK YOU!

Re: Our employee handbook..
State DBL does only pay $170 per week. You need to determine if your employer has a Short Term DBL policy (you may or may not pay into that) or a salary continuance program.
As far as the leave of absence is concerned, you would be entitled to a Family Medical Leave of Absence (FMLA), which is different than the other types of leaves your company may allow. Providing you worked 1250 hours last year and have been employed for 1 year, they must offer FMLA per DOL regulations.
FM me if you have any questions!

some smaller Companies do not have to offer FMLA as well. Would look into that.

Re: Our employee handbook..
My cie had STD through our Health Insurance carrier (paid with % of income!).
Then we have leave of absence (unpaid!) for any medical or personal reasons up to a certain time.
The we have FMLA (unpaid)
They kind of overlap each other.

Re: Our employee handbook..
NY has a law for disability, which is what you are once you give birth, disabled. [be glad you are]
in NY, employers must pay you disability for medical disability. the minimum is the state plan which is half your weekly pay UP TO $170/week.
this is all i'll be collecting as well, but it is better than nothing at all. some companies carry private disability insurance and you get more...but you are getting what you are legally entitled to at elast.

Re: Our employee handbook..
Depending on your relationships with your supervisors, I wouldn't recommend telling them you're not planning on coming back. You can say you haven't decided yet
As far as the leave, if you want to stay out longer, you might have to take unpaid leave

Just work on telling them the good news. I wouldn't let on that you're not coming back.

You will only get 6 weeks of short term disability paid through the state if you have a vaginal birth and 8 if it's a c-section. If you go out on disability prior to giving birth, you would of course get paid for those weeks as well.

Re: Our employee handbook..
NEVER tell them you are not coming back. If you do they do not have to pay you ANY disability (I am 99% sure of that). You can give them 2 weeks notice prior to your return date or go into work for a bit and help them transition your job.
If asked just yes "Yes. I am planning on coming back after taking my allowed leave."
