Orchid flowers are wilting

I recently bought my first orchid (Cymbidium orchid). They are so beautiful but I always heard they are hard to maintain. Well I have a problem now.

The flower portion is wilting from the bottom to the top. The actual leaves and plant seems healthy.

Does anyone know why? Or have any insight as to what I should do.

Try sending Kathy116 a FM. She really knows what she is talking about when it comes to Orchids.

I have a bunch of orchids in my house. The actual flowers last about a month and then they begin to die. Once the flowers start to wilt you can cut off the stem that they are growing on close to the bottom. It usually takes a few months for them to re-bloom.

Yup, unfortunately the flowers don't last all that long. The challenge will be reblooming it.

Cybidiums are one of my favorite orchids. You should consider putting it outside for the summer if you can, if you have a covered porch. They like cool nights (one of the things that prompts them to flower).

Good luck with it!

Re: Orchid flowers are wilting

Orchids are really not difficult to grow or get them to bloom (at least this is my experience).

I think most people give up on the plant before the orchid is ready to bloom again.

I honestly don't do all that much to mine except keep them in the window (facing east), water them once every week or every other week (depending on how busy I am).

I used to do the orchid food, and fertilizers, but I just don't have the time...and it hasn't made any difference. I still get blooms at least once a year (depending on the plant, more).

Just give it light, water and a lot of time....it will rebloom, but it may take a full year. That's why I have bought all different orchids, at all different times of the year, so I always have a few in bloom.

Good luck...if you have more technical questions, greenfreak is definately the girl for that...she knows her stuff.
