Opinions needed - question about children's age and year born

If one child was born in November of 2007, and another child was born two months later in January 2008, could it be said they were the same age? Keep in mind they are in different grades. Would you ever describe this as 2 children who are the same age? Or would you go strictly by year born?

When comparing the two of them, they are absolutely the same age. 2 months apart is 2 months apart. The fact that a year ends on Dec 31st is purely arbitrary. If the year went from Aug-July, they would both be in the same "year".

Same age. They are both 7. Fwiw, in Nj they would both be in 1st grade as the cut off is 10/1.

Even forget about the school and grade. I guess the bigger question is the year born. This person I am debating this with says since they aren't born in the same year, they are not and would not be considered same age. I disagreed and said yes they would be considered the same age, despite the fact that one was born in 2007 and one in 2008. They are only 2 months apart.

The person you are arguing with lacks the basic concept of math then. Regardless of the fact that they were born in different years, they are not a YEAR apart. They are 2 months apart, which makes them the same age.

To the OP: School year cutoffs are arbitrary and vary by district and state. Your friend needs to learn math...

My birthday is Oct 1980, my BIL was born Jan 1981. We were a year apart during school, but I always say we're the same age. A few months is a few months. It was only a big deal on my 30th and upcoming 35th birthdays... BIL is stubbornly maintaining that he is much younger lol.

This. So by this person's logic if one kid was born on 12/31 at 11:59pm and the other was born 1/1 at 12:01am they would not be the same age? This makes no sense to me!

Maybe I'm oversimplifying it in my mind, but this seems like a ridiculous question.

They are the same age from January through November each year...then from November until the birthday in January they are different ages.

Am I missing something?

There was a thread about that with identical twins. There are several examples where identical twins are born in different years, a few minutes, or a few hours apart.

By "age", we usually refer to their approximate time on earth since their birth. Nobody is exactly an age, except for one second per year. After that, they are "7 years, 3 months, 2 days, 1 hour, 42 minutes", etc.

Every school grade has kids born Sept-Dec (depending on when the cutoff birthdate is), and kids born Jan-Aug. They are still the same age.

On the other side of the argument, I don't consider a kid born Jan 1st 2007 the same age as a kid born Dec 31st 2007. They are a year apart, even though they are born on the same year.

I would say to this person - how old is child a_
Answer=7
How old is child; B? Answer=7

Is 7 the same at 7? then yes, they are the same age. Chat Icon

What was the context that this came up? Does it even matter?

My DH was born in the year before me & was in the grade before me, but we are less than 4 months apart. I generally consider us the same age, expect right now, b/c is closer to 40 than me & I don't want to admit it! Chat Icon

Same Age! My DS is October 2008 and my niece is January 2009.

I always say they are the same age or only 3 months apart. They are only technically different ages for 3 months, and even though they are in two different grades they are pretty much the same. Trust me when these two are together they are a handful and its like having twins.Chat Icon

Even my DS says he is only x years old for a few months and then he will be the same age as his cousin. Lol

My cousin and I are 9 months apart, and we always said a year older.

Eta: technically my DS should be in the same grade as his cousin but I smuggled him into Kindergarten via catholic school.
