Open Floor Plan

If you have an open floor plan, should you paint it all one color or try to break it up?

I really love open floors plans that are painted the same color, so that the entire space flows.

I like when furniture and area rugs are placed correctly to divide the space

IMO it gets a little to busy when you see this large open floor plan and a bunch of colors.

ours is painted one color

if there is molding - you can put in other colors - it just looks weird when two different colors touch without molding

How open are the rooms to eachother?

My house is sort of an open floor plan but not really, I'm not sure what my house is I mixed up my colors because I didn't want the whole first floor to be the same color. From my front door you can see the foyer, up the stairs to the loft, you can see into my kitchen (through a cut out in the wall) and straight ahead is my living-dining room...so even though it's not an open concept where the kitchen/dining/family area are one large area you can still see all the major rooms on the first floor at the same time from certain vantage points...I chose to break up the colors - I think I did the right thing, but sometimes I question myself and wonder how it would have looked if I did all the same...

If it is a true open floor plan I like when it's one color - say for example green but you use more than one color from the same paint swatch you use the medium 3 colors so there is a slight variation in the kitchen area vs the family room...and use other things to break up the areas...but slight variations can be nice...not accent walls just slight variations so it's not so boring maybe?...

We have an open floor plan and we stuck to very neutral paint colors. All walls are a light creme color and the largest common wall is darker coffee/brown color. It just added a little character.

While you have a very open plan, I wouldn't say its a true open floor plan. a true open floor plan means no walls or closed spaces with in an entire floor besides closets

my kitchen, LR and DR are all open to each other and they are the same color. My den is connected to the LR and is a similar color, but I agree the 1 foot of paint that touches is strange - I'm painting it this summer to be all the same.

yea, my house is weird - i like that it's open though and not like a box but i *wish* i had a real open floor plan, i would have loved if my kitchen and family room were open to eachother - i love that!

We have a complete open floor plan, kitchen,dr,lr,entryway.....all one color. There were no stops or other walls to make different colors.

Nik, you completely painted your home the right way. I would have done the same thing......complimentary colors.

yes we have an open floor plan and painted entire first floor china white. so pretty; neutral and airy!

We have a coop and our LR is open to our DR and the kitchen. We have a granite Island in the kitchen that is goldish so we have one paint color (Light gold/yellow/peachish) and then we broke up the rooms with accent pieces.

I felt that keeping the paint all one color was the best idea. An accent wall is nice, but we ended up doing a large colorful painting in our dining room instead.
