Hey mommies, i havent been on a while so i hope everyone doing well. I need help. My son has been having a rough start to life. He started out projectile vomiting they did sono and upper gi series everything was normal. Showed Gerd. Reflux is so bad he is sooo uncomfortable we have been through all the similac formula and now on elecare. Peditrician has us adding 1 tsp and 1/2 of oatmeal to each bottle giving gas drops, and he is on axid for the gerd. Last night he started choking no air passing through all this saliva in his mouth took him to ER and they say again it is the GERD. My question is moms with children going through this how did you manage. I keep blaming my self i cry with every feeding. He is hungry i try small frequent meals but he wants his food so we were at 4 oz every 3 to 4 hours but now he wants 5. he is 4 weeks measuring 10lbs 2 oz. Another thing they are saying he is getting big to fast. As a mom i feel like already im failing in my job in keeping him healthy, am i realling making him obese.

You are NOT making him obese

Both of my daughters have/had reflux. DD2 has it a lot worse than the first. She's also on axid for it and nutramigen. She's constantly choking and gasping for air (although it has gotten better since starting axid). I'm always jumping up during the night b/c I hear her choking. Ped said its normal for a baby with reflux. Though they are not in pain anymore with the meds, they can still burp up and cough up formula, which is why they are choking in the first place. My Ped said it will pass as time goes on.

thank you for response. this is reassuring. Scary as hell but does reassure me that he is normal. I just hate seeing him in pain and cant help but wonder if this is the precurser to something else going on. How do you position child to sleep. i cant find any positioners.

with the car seat did you swaddle her? and did you find the neck stay supported. I have him in swing now and dont know if incline enough when i sit swing up his next flops and he goes to side. thank you again.

My son will be 4 weeks on Wednesday and he has GERD as well. He projectile vomited a few hours after birth and was diagnosed in the hospital. I know exactly what you are going through with feedings, gasping, choking and constant hunger.

We started him on zantac last week, which isn't helping enough, so I will ask for axid when we see the doctor this week. We have not changed his formula yet, but we can talk about that as well this week.

Hang in there! I know its tough, but we will get through this! They will grow out of this in time!

Try putting him in a bouncy seat or swing to sleep... DS lived in his for the first few months. Also bad GERD. He was put on Zantac which worked better then the Axid IMO... But after 5 months, he started to spit it out. It tastes horrible. He went on Axid. Took more of that to help him. He was also on Elecare. He was slow to gain weight IMO. But the pedi said it was fine as long as he was gaining. At that age I fed on demand. DS's belly was so bad, that he could only eat 2-3 ounces every 2-3 hours... He only went to 5 ounces around month 6 and then he was sleeping better..When they lay down it makes the reflux worse. try to keep him upright a lot.. DS was on Elecare until 15 months. He also had a milk protein and severe soy allergy. He is now 19 months old, still on 1ML of Axid at night. He still has a soy allergy. Reflux and allergies go hand in hand.. See if you can take him to a pedi GI, they will help you a lot better then the reg pedi...

I also wanted to add that my son sleeps in the Fisher Price Sleep and Play which is elevated. I also change his head position every so often and alternate which side of the changing table I put him on so that he does not start favoring one side (due to arching).

A friend of mine's DC has reflx pretty bad and she said it took awhile to get it under control. From changing meds, to regulating the times of the meds, to using a sleep wedge AND elevating the head of the crib.

I know its hard to see them in pain and hear them cry but just keep experimenting with different things to help relieve the discomfort!

Zantac, soy formula and sleeping in a swing is what helped my DS. Up until 12 months he was still spitting up ALOT but it wasnt projectile anymore.
