They give it to you when you either dialeted 4-6cm or when you absolutely cant handle the pain. Does not make you feel high, but you also wont be able to feel anything pretty much below your chest. It lasts until they shut it off in most cases. And no it doesnt hurt, you get a local first then the actual Epi, and IMHO the contractions hurt way worse than anything

Re: ? On epi?
I got mine at 3cm- and i was NOT numb at all. I felt no pain, but could feel the pressure of the contractions. Also, I was able to move my legs just fine.
I suppose everyone feels it differently......

same here. I was definitely able to move my legs.
for me - it was like a warm feeling coming over you, and the pain went away, but you feel a little pressure with each contraction.

This was true for me too until it ran out and I ended up having to feel everything when it came time to push Speak up if you feel it running out. I waited too long because I didn't know any better and when they figured it out it was too late for more.

Re: ? On epi?
I actually was able to get mine before I dialated. They had to do a procedure to make me dialate that was very painful so they gave me the Epi to do it. From there I then dialated 4 cm and stalled but it was because DD was too big, not because of the epi. I wasn't able to move my legs at all. It didn't really hurt to get it. Just a little pinch when they numbed my back.

Re: ? On epi?
I was at 4cm. It didn't hurt except for the pinch when they numb the area prior to inserting the epi. Its a drip, not a one time shot, so it is continuous and won't wear off. If you need a C they just turn it up. I couldn't move my legs, but some women can. It was PURE relief when I got it.

Re: ? On epi?
They gave me mine at 4cm. It didn't hurt at all...although they had to stop twice while I experienced contractions. I was so thankful after it was in. Like the OP said, it is continuous. I didn't feel numb at all until they decided I needed a CS & they pumped demeroff into it, then I felt numb below my neck.

Re: ? On epi?
I had mine at 5cm and it was GREAT! DH kept looking at the monitor (contraction monitor) and then looking at me and smiling saying - you don't feel that????- nope, nothing! The did start to let it wear off by the time I had to push so I felt a lot more than I would have liked down there ...but I was spared the contractions.

When do the docs consider it too late to get an epi??
