Old dog smelling?

I have a 16 yr old cocker spaniel. She was my grandmas and I inherited her 4 years ago when she died. She is a sweet dog but now has lost all control of going to the bathroom. She pee's everyone in the house, and I tried to block her in my kitchen with gates but she barks all night. I'm excepting a baby soon and I don;t know how I'm going to manage cleaning up after her all day, the smell of urine every where and taking care of a new baby. I love this dog dearly but I need to find some sort of solution.

I took her to the vet and he said there is nothing I can do, excpet put her to sleep (which I refuse to do, she has nothing medically wrong with her, she eats well, plays and runs all over).

Even after I bathe her she still smells. Is there some product that I could use, or a special way to bathe her. What can I do to get rid of the smell, do you think she would go on wee wee pads. There has to be something.

Re: Old dog smelling?

ok this may sound crazy but they have diapers for dogs and they do work. My DH had 2 cocker spaniels who lived to be over 10 each and at the end they too began to smell pretty bad I think it has to do with their ears since they are floppy so I would check that first and see if it is her ears if not I dont think there is much more to do Chat Icon Good Luck.

Re: Old dog smelling?

I have an old cocker spaniel too that has no control over his bodily functions. I sympathize with you. Try frequent groomings and baths and also check for an ear infection. As far as cleaning the pee I try to use fantastik with bleach as much as possible. Good luck!!

Re: Old dog smelling?

i was going to suggest diapers, I found the doggie ones expensive so I bought baby diapers like pull ups and cut a hole. External Image

This is a great idea. I wish I would have thought of it a few years ago when my dog got old and was having problems. It would have saved a lot of messes and work and would have made him more comfortable I think when we weren't home.

ETA I tried the doggie ones but I felt it was more appropriate for a female and I had a male.

Check the ears - they may need a cleaning or a possible infection.

i agree. at this point you can't train her to go on the wee wee pads. i mean you can try, but with a baby coming do you want to have to do that? management sounds like the best idea

i also agree w OP. my childhood poodle smelled b/c she had constant ear infections/ issues

Good luck!! and bless you for not putting her to sleep Chat Icon Chat Icon
