Okay, so this could go on a few boards but I'll post here

I just got an email from our dept. that Extreme Makeover:Home Edition is coming to our area and they want UMD students to volunteer from Aug 22-29, 24 hours a day.

I really haven't watched the show. I know they make over homes. What do you think would be involved in volunteering? Actual building and painting? The email didn't mention anything about experience necessary...

Would you do it?

oh wow! i would totally do this. if you don't have any experience they will most likely have you do things like cleaning or helping put furniture in the house when it is done. i am willing to bet that a lot of the "volunteers" are also extras that they use during the demolition portion of the taping, when they record all the people that come out to help, it's more for "show" than anything.

Probably moving furniture, carrying supplies (paint, nails, tools, food, water), covering furniture that can't be moved, possibly some painting. I would guess it would depend on the individual's skill level. Habitat for Humanity builds houses with volunteers, and they assess everyone's skills, then have them work on appropriate tasks.

if you have the time do it, they aren't going to ask you to do things you don't know how, they want the houses to come out great, they always have some construction company there for those things

I've always thought it would be nice to do habitat for humanity, but usually you have to go elsewhere for that I don't have the time to take off of work. This is HERE in my county and I can do it after work for a few hours.

If I could I would do it. I did habitat for humanity with my old job. They had sponsered a house. It was a couple of weekends. I felt so rewarded that I nailed some walls and cut drywall. You probably won't do that for the home makeover show but you will help. It feels so good when you see the people's face and seeing their reactions. You feel so validated for all your effort to help them.

TOTALLY do it! It could involve any number of things-- painting, hammering nails, or even doing crafts for the kids in the family. On a recent episode, they had volunteers helping local families make get well cards for the sick dad (who later died Chat Icon Chat Icon).

I would totally do it!
